Some people seem to think these are problematic others love them. Anybody have experience of the engine and what did you think?

I've had the lower output version and found it to be problematic, with the timing chain needing replacement followed shortly by the turbo failing. I've read of many issues of the 160PS version too.

I'd only buy one again if it had a good warranty attached to it, or a perfect maintenance history with proof of all the known weak parts having being replaced.

When they work its a fantastic engine but if they go wrong they can throw up some seriously expensive bills.

What year are you planning to buy?

The earlier the car, the more potential problem (unless its already had a new engine).

Later models should be OK i.e. get the last one built before the switch to MK7.

Or get lower power 122PS or GTI or Audi A3 1.8T

I had a scirocco with the same engine. it was a nice drive, felt like it had more power than 160hp. Averaged about 36mpg in mixed use.

Had it two years and it was serviced twice at vw dealer when after covering only 12000 miles the engine lunched itself. Full new engine required.

On the evidence decided to have a look at the car. Car looked good but the boot space was not what I was expecting. All Golf's now out of the running as it is too small.
