Hey there everybody,

Wondering if anyone can give me a quick beginners guide on old Fiat 500's, been wondering about them for a while, but haven't thought too seriously. The misses and me are quite keen (that's a first!) and one has come up locally.

It's an L and apparently used frequently (which I take as a good thing). I've bought and sold a few cars over the years but never a classic (closest is a Westfield 7). As this car has come up, it's taken me a bit off guard!

Any specific things to look for? Anything that should be avoided like the plague? Any tips much appreciated.

Rust would be your main concern, check everywhere for it even under the battery tray in the front boot. A good example should have a painted underside not one covered with a Waxoyle like sealant. However if it is sealed then ask for photos of before the sealant being applied, if their are no photos it maybe because they are trying to hide a rusty floor pan. If its a non synchro box then check to see if it jumps out of first or reverse gear. Thats a sign of a worn gearbox. Check the suspension arms for cracks as well. The kingpin suspension arms should be greased fairly regularly too. It might also be worth getting the owner to turn the steering wheel while you place you hand against the inside of a front wheel to check for play in the steering. Another point is if the car cuts out when hot the distributor cap may be cracked or damaged in some way.
