Where in Malta?
Discussion
Here right now and a beautiful evening around 21-22C with a lovely breeze. I live in St Julians and while is has it's active bar/club area there are also some great relaxing pubs/bars to sit outside at. Weather is perfect right now, no long trousers, socks or shoes 24hrs a day for weeks on end

Yes, it will be lovely in St Julians at that time of night, although it's been nice here in the UK the last week or so, the only thing is you know it isn't going to last....My next door neighbour in Malta did all the patterned concrete at Portomaso marina..
Lots of advice already given - I visited Malta around 13 times during family holidays as a child - we stayed in Qawra which is quiet but near enough to Bugibba for the bars etc. If you're looking for something more cultural then perhaps Valetta is more up your street. That said, I remember the buses being pretty good so it's easy enough to get around the island. Let us know what you choose!
Hi all, just a quick update. My Son's Girlfriend found a lovely 3 bed apartment in Mellieha Bay and I got a really good deal on the flights.
As I previously said, I am very grateful for all the useful advice given here. I sent the link to my Children and they were amazed at the amount of help from people that we've never met.
Thanks
Tim

Just returned after 6 nights in Malta.
Shame to say it's not what it used to be, still got the gorgeous sights etc but lost some of its character.
In what way? I think it's a much nicer place now and that's why I spend much of the year here. Lot's of EU investment, much more international and factors like it's the only country in the Med to have no raw sewage outfall into the sea, again thanks to EU funded treatment plants. Loads of nightlife (or very quiet areas if you want) and great restaurants compared to 20+ years ago. All the old sites are still there but now it's a much more vibrant island. Just my opinion!Shame to say it's not what it used to be, still got the gorgeous sights etc but lost some of its character.
For a start the bus rides are boring!
Last time I visited was 14 years ago and it just seemed a much nicer place, every where I looked now it was full of the typical english holiday makers who just wanted to get pissed and be loud.
I don't disagree that its alot cleaner looking now though.

Not sure which area you stayed in but I'm in St Julians. This area is very international, so the 'drunken Brit' types aren't really to be seen. They tend to congregate in the St Pauls's Bay/Bugibba/Qawra areas. Here it's more German/Scandanavian/French/Italian/Spanish/you name it.Last time I visited was 14 years ago and it just seemed a much nicer place, every where I looked now it was full of the typical english holiday makers who just wanted to get pissed and be loud.

The bus system improved dramatically in 2011 when Arriva were brought in but petty local political and a labour government winning power last year forced them out. Now it's a mess of local operators, shame as it was real progress with Arriva. The very old buses which you are referring to were fun for a visitor here for a week but for those who needed to use them every day, they were a nightmare not to mention the pollution. Hoefully they'll sort out a nice modern system again as with Arriva because that's the only option for the locals.
I always rent a car, cheap and the best way to get around.
Heading to Malta in April for a week (St Julians) having booked some flights in the BA Business Class sale a while back. Work colleagues had been recently (or so I thought) so when I managed to get decent flights (using avois) I asked which hotels they would recommend - turns out they had been to Madeira not Malta..... Anyway, booked into the Hilton and have booked a Fiat Panda for the week for £80. We are looking for a relaxing break by the pool so hopefully it will be warm enough.
When we went a few years ago, managed to stumble over link to this place

If you are interested in ancient history and unusual historic sites - pre-book: they only let a very limited number in each day so can't leave it until you're there or chance it. Unique site and amazing.

Should be quite pleasant in April, not too hot.If you can get yourself over to the Apple's eye café at Golden Bay for 9.00 on any Sunday morning you should see some classic cars and bikes....
