What's the deal here. I joined a role last year in said company whereby one of the draws was the manager I was working under. He left recently to head up a new department in the same company but has expressed on a few instances what my career plans were and how good I was. Well roll on today I was called to his new office to discuss a work matter actually but it lead on to career again. I'm happy where I am to a certain extent and have not learnt the role conversely to say I'm at that time to move on. However this manager has substantial appraised me to the highest level in my mid year appraisal and having worked under him have had my attributes utilized to the fullest whereby I've been ranked highly on merit because of this.

Anyway I went back to my desk and messaged him saying I wanted to work in said dept.

He has said I need to let my current manager know.

However have I jumped the gun a bit as I have not received a formal offer from said manager just an interest in me. Should there not be an opportunity it may make things awkward in my current dept.

Some punctuation wouldn't go amiss, but since it's internal to a company it's no problem at all.

OP started his current role 9 months ago

One of the attractions was the manager he would be working for (presumably OP respects his abilities)

OP's old manager has moved to a new department, but has expressed praise for OP several times

OP's old manager called him in to talk about work, but then quickly moved the conversation on to discuss headhunting OP for his new team

OP is happy in his current role and doesn't feel he's learned it well enough to say "it's time to move on"

But that said, his manager has given him excellent appraisal scores, and in the OP's opinion has used his skills and abilities well, which has helped him to develop more quickly in his role.

OP has had a brief think and then messaged his old manager saying he wishes to work for him in the new department, his old manager suggested that OP just needs to let his new manager know.

OP is worried that he has nothing in black and white, and if the "offer" fails to come off, he may have st in his own nest/bit the hand that feeds him.

I'd do nothing else at this point. Enjoy the flattery, but knuckle down in your current role. If things develop and old boss wants you for a real role, then let him make the first move. Of course keep an eye out for new roles as they appear and apply if it feels right. One assumes the internal talent management and succession planning processes would pick you up anyway if you're destined for higher office. Good luck!
