I am thinking about trading in an M3 and was looking at one of these as an alternative. I was just wondering what they were like to own in terms of driving impressions, running costs, good points and bad points, what to look for when buying. I am looking at a nearly new one, 2013 model or something only a few months old with low mileage and a decent warranty.

Any advice much appreciated.

The new model has just been released and their are some very large discounts available, have a look on Drive The Deal, a new one may be as cheap as nearly new.

Well services are every 10k or year at about £200' cam belt every 4-5 years £400 including water pump, tax is circa 270' average mpg 30, no real vices, main engine issues are cheap to fix, tuneable to 310 bhp easily, insurance is what it is for you.
Choice of manual or dsg, official performance is understated at circa 6.2 , reality on a dry road nearer 5.6 seconds for dsg,

Unlike 4 we'd golfs being 2wd gives a bit more engagement to the car, you can feel it moving on the road but it's Lowe centre of gravity and wider track make for good handling, dsg makes for very effective cross country car, fairly effortless.

R interior much nicer that gt, loads of space and comfortable, boot good size but a high lip. I prefer the original car vs the new facelift, there are only circa 700 scirocco r models registered in the uk, so finding colour and spec could be difficult, they seem to hold values well, even early ones (2010) are circa 19 k now. I doubt despite discounts well see a lot of face lied rs as people will prefer to buy poverty spec golf r models. Early r have no space saver spare, just tubes of tyre sealant.

Not good for car parks, no rear visibility and the doors are very long.

I test drove one a few months ago and really enjoyed the drive - adaptive damping was decent and the ride on 19s was better than our old A6 on 17s! Was pleasingly engaging compared to the manual S3 we tried. Reminded me of our Leon Cupra R 225 we had in 2005 - just quicker!

Only downsides coming from an M3 aside from the obvious performance and presence(we test drove an E90 M3 saloon too) will be perceived quality inside, particularly in the back which is full of hard black plastics which look out of place at the price. Headroom is adequate for adults in the back and we would've seriously considered buying if my son hadn't decided the back was far too enclosed which made him travel sick!

Don't bother hunting for a sunroof model - it only tilts and is frankly a waste of time and space! Most are high spec but the occasional poverty special does turn up. Some private sale ones usually around which would be worth a look. Blue definitely the best colour smile

I'm not sure is a surprise to say the interior isn't as nice as a car costing twice as much when new, but I would say the sunroof is actually useful if fitted for a few reasons, draught free ventilation, extra headroom and a lighter feel to the interior.

Maybe so, but at the price I'd expect there to less obvious signs of hard plastics all over the shop -
Can feel like you're sitting in a big plastic bucket in the back! I did really like it though smile

Reviewed one in PVW magazine back to back with a BMW M135I. Sounds like the BMW p*ssed all over it in almost every respect (and was/is cheaper to buy in the first place?). I know where my money would go.
