Robing b4stards springs to mind.

Being a registered classic, insurance should be cheaper via a specialist with no need to use your no claims if you have another car to use it on.

Out of interest and I didn't want to start a new thread just for this. How much were Chimaeras when new? Does anyone have any price lists? Ideally interested in 1994 price as that's mine.

In 1995, they were about £30k. Plus any 'extras' of course. The 5 litre version was about £4k more I think.

I remember looking at 16 saab cabs with my ex before she bought one 5 weeks of days off wasted
and 18mths later the turbo blew and took out the engine ,car had to be scrapped . Sometimes you may as well buy one and work thru the problems,

1st thing i notice is it's location.
2nd there are no interior pictures, price can reflect in this.Seats, carpets may be in poor condition and the wood fascia surround often suffer from cracking especially around the heater control.
3rd Very little use would concern me as it's one thing we all agree on is they like to be used and after standing still the gremlins appear.

So unless you want to take the ex to Ireland for a few days i would carry on your search.

Hello all.
As a recent Chimaera owner I thought I'd add my penny worth to this thread.
I bought the only Chimaera I,d looked at for the £7500 mentioned, including 6 months tax.
1997 facelift car, genuine 49000 miles, good imperial blue paintwork, good interior apart from some wear to the carpets, recent hood, brand new MOT, drove well, chassis solid, wipers slow and a small oil leak.....
With hindsight maybe I should have looked and saved more for a better one! Wipers stopped altogether, new motor needed! The oil leak was the rear main oil seal, never had a clutch so guess what? New clutch being fitted. Slight tappety noise heard on test drive, nothing major, turned out to be worn cam. The car is at Central as we speak having these and several more jobs attended to. I would love to have done these myself but am so busy at the moment and as I want to use the car it seemed the best option.
I must say both Andy and Adrian at Central seem like top men, both very helpful and approachable so we'll wait and see how the car turns out.
After saying all that, at least I will know what's been done, (along with my wallet!) and I will give the suspension a refurb myself later on.
So, to answer the original post.
I am sure that if you are lucky it is possible to buy a nice car for £7500. Expect to spend money on it though and I think to buy a properly sorted car you can realistically expect to be looking at £10 - £12K, maybe more!
It does seem you get what you pay for and unfortunately the noise of a TVR can make buying a very blinkered experience!
Regards, Chris.

All the above problems can occur on any Chimaera even if its up for sale at 20k

True but a good inspection will show whether it's a good one or not.

If you are unsure, take a competent owner with you who knows the ins and outs.

These are after all, simple cars under the skin!

Just to clarify!
Having owned TVR, Scimitar and Lotus before I wasn't expecting my car to be perfect and I did look underneath before I purchased it to check the chassis, which has been confirmed ok by Central. No doubt the outriggers will need replacing in the future though, as will most I suspect.
I agree that any car, no matter what price, can still need work doing on it. I think that whatever price you pay you must expect to spend money on the car unless all of the work has been done by an enthusiastic owner, in which case the car will be more expensive.
You pay your money and make a choice I guess!I agree though, the less it costs, the more you can spend.
Chris.

That's why I put this up, lots of money spent with practically everything renewed by an enthusiastic owner.
