V70 P2 D5 Hot starting problem

Hi all,
My admittedly leggy (250k) V70 has recently become difficult to start when hot. The hot weather this last week has exacerbated the problem and for the first time earlier this week I thought it wouldn't start, 15 seconds or so and 2 attempts before it spluttered into life. Cold starting is fine always first or second turn.
From reading around the injectors seem to be the most likely cause followed by the pump. One post suggested removing the fuel return pipe from the injectors, starting the car and looking to see how much leak back there is, anything more than a few drips being out of the ordinary.
Has anyone tried this? Are there any significant risks? I'm assuming the diesel is not at high pressure by then.
