Hi, all

Owing to a misadventure with a garage not screwing an alternator back on properly I ended up with a VERY flat battery (so flat that the interior lights were not illuminated and the central locking wouldn't even work turning the key). As a result of this I seem to have been left with some legacy problems which, according to Ross-Tech, have a common sollution listed: perform basic setting.

My question is: Is there a way to perform a basic setting without using VCDS? Other marques have some convoluted sequences to reset things, does Audi have the same thing, or is it a garage job?

I know there are other possible causes to my codes, but this seems like a good, non-invasive, place to start!

The car is an Audi A4 B7 2005 with a 2.0T FSI BGB engine, if that makes a difference.

Thanks in anticipation! thumbup

no, you can't. smile

Unless there is other software like dealers use that can do it. I'm not aware of any other 3rd parties that offer the same as ross-tech.

I managed it, after a fashion - I read on an American Audi owner's website that one way of achieving what I was after doing was to clear the fault codes, which effectively flashes the equivalent of the RAM. If the ignition is then put to position 1 for 3 minutes and then the car subsequently started and allowed to warm up without touching the accelerator then this forces the ECU to go through a learning process.

The explanation of the process may not be quite right, but the end result was a much smoother running engine, better throttle response and slightly better fuel economy. Engine Management Light returned, though. This was finally extinguished by replacing the Pressure Crankcase Valve.

I understand that it won't have been a true "Basic Setting" but I is 'appy! biggrin

Edit: "Learning" not "leaning." Chuzzlewit! getmecoat

That's what I was thinking! thumbup

Now for the spark plugs (NGK laser series ones), ignition leads and possibly coil packs, air filter (K & N million mile one - any thoughts?) and cabin filter.

Oil & filter and fuel filter done.
