Another option to think about is Guitar Rig or similar - links up to your PC/Laptop/Mac via a pedal board and looks to be a fair bit cheaper than the Boss system. It also has facilities for phrase training, slowing down phrases without changing the tuning etc...

This is the option I have gone for, I have installed Anytune Pro on my Macbook Pro which I will be using along with an Apogee Jam 96K.

I fiddle around with a phrase until I can play it how I want it. If I'm trying out new phrases I try them along to drum beats, offbeat, on beat, or melodies. Invent a melody and you'll find you're not just ripping through scales
