Rover SD1 at Goodwood: Time For Tea?

A Rover V8 and oversteer; make Monday afternoon pass a little quicker with this onboard!

The Gerry Marshall Trophy at the Goodwood Members' Meeting recently was a must-see for all fans of historic cars. Capris, Escorts, GTVs, Minis, Mustangs - all sorts. Every car was battling hard for every position and the racing was superb. Here we have a snippet of onboard from the victorious Rover SD1, prepared by JD Classics. Why feature a Members' Meeting video now? Because it was only published last week. Better late than never and all that.

Seeing a cage and race equipment in a very brown Rover interior looks strange. But not half as strange as hearing a raucous V8 amongst the velour and old vents.

The vid shows both Chris Ward and Andrew Smith driving. We've said it before, we'll probably say it again, but motorsport was a better spectacle with less grip. Slithering and sliding its way round, the SD1 is a great watch. Top work all round!

Enjoy.

I never normally last to the end of such clips but that was intoxicatingly brilliant.

Me too.....

Just need it now in 'sensorama' so you can smell the tyre rubber and the thirsty big V8 spitting and popping fuel and oil.

Love it

What a fantastic machine and what a noise, I love the SD1. Truly a Pistonheads car if there ever was one.

Owned 2 SD1s back in the early 90's.. the 2nd one purchased was an ex Police manual 3.5 V8. Big old bus, loved it!

This sounds amazing!

That quite reminds me of in car footage of Gerry Marshall driving Baby Bertha. get it into the corner, give it some welly and a dab of opposite lock.

What's not to like?

That very brown interior looks very much like David Bache beige - seemingly his favourite colour for car interiors. This one sounds good and well-sorted,

Less is definatly more, when it come to grip.....if you know what I mean!
Nearly anything with a live axle, longish wheelbase and a reasonable amount of power can be hooned around looking out of the side window. A great soundtrack just adds to the experience.

Takes me back to when I worked for Patrick Motors, & Patrick MotorSport, when we raced these cracking cars in the British Saloon Car Championship (as it was known then).

The cars were run for us by Martin Thomas. We had some great times & some good races although as we were not the favoured 'works' team we couldn't quite match the TWR cars.

However we had some great fun & we almost won the Tourist Trophy at Silverstone in, I think, 1981.

Happy days & good memories.

So good to see these cars being driven balls out like this.

Epic stuff - I also noted that the replica PMG liveried Mini 1275GT was also being given the beans. Love it.

More please.

Crikey - it doesn't get much better than that.

On a geeky note, it seems to be based on a 2300 model, as it has wind up windows. Clearly the 2300 6 has been replaced...

I've just bought my second SD1 - a 1984 Vitesse. Second gear is a bit sticky in my car too. They all do that, sir.

Loved the way that driver no. 2 tried to go for the non-existent sixth gear just before the left hander.

I thought I'd add this here if you didn't see it in the you tube thread. Murray walker and SD1 action.

Awsome..

2 heros I have always followed and thought the best at their particular disciplines….Gerry Marshall in Racing cars and The one and only Tony Pond in a rally car..both legends and in my opinion the best of their time.
