Hi, my bike was nicked last Tuesday night about 11pm.
Totally opportunistic and random. Popped into a shop for five minutes, came out and it was gone.
Police reckon no cctv and no suspects so the report just gets filed.

What did they do? Lob it into the back of a van? Wheel it away?

Sorry to hear about that.

Not far from where I live (palmers green). I will keep an eye out but I would think it's been moved far from the general area

was it in the high street at southgate? Im sure there is lots of CCTV there because of the parking fines etc

Good luck in getting it recovered - I have been informed there are apparently a group of semi-organised bike theives in the area (neighbour was chattign with me about it when I got annoyed that someone had removed my bike covers overnight some years ago, he had lots of bikes taken)

options for getting rid of a bike are, ship it out the country, break it for parts grind numbers off frame engine sell it to some to go racing with, alot of people don't check frame engine numbers and some people don't care if its stolen and the price is right.

As for the thieves they are on a high profit margin so some money is better than no money.

Convert them to track bikes, strip them for parts or a lot get shipped abroad in vans.

fair enough... you'd think that paperwork would be checked at the docks/ports wouldn't you really.... i.e. can only ship/transport if you have the v5...

would you care to explain how a lack of knowledge about a certain subject is stupid? i've never had a vehicle stolen and never stolen one myself. so not really au fait with the whole scenario...

can you explain the ins and outs of astrophysics to me? by the way, if you cant, you're stupid...

Err, hold on a sec Peter, he did have a point.

Perhaps stupid was too harsh though, naieve or daft would have been kinder.

Sounds like a planned theft. Seen any dodgy vans on your road recently? If they know you owned the bike, they just needed to stake out your place for a little while, follow you down the road when you leave on the bike, wait for you to leave the bike for 5 minutes. A few blokes jump out, bike in the back of a van 30 seconds later, gone.

You can't sell a stolen car on "as is" either, so not sure why you would pick out bike theft as being any more pointless?

In fact, bikes are much easier to steal, much easier to hide and there are many more avenues for profitable disposal than for stolen cars.

I've never been the victim of car crime but I've had 2 bikes stolen, never to be seen again.

i dont believe i did 'pick out' bike theft as being more pointless. this is a bike forum and the OP stated his bike has been stolen. hence the reference. i didnt make a comparison as to whether one was more pointless than the other....

Bikes are smaller, easier to dismantle and often have desirable aftermarket extras.

Forget shipping them to Africa, say hello to ebay.co.uk. Your local stolen bike recycler.

Not to mention that the most popular bikes being stolen are often new(ish) sportsbikes. in other words, bikes that get binned occasionally and cost a fortune to fix, so OEM replacement parts are highly valuable.

Unlikely to be planned. I wasn't near home and had been out riding so no one would have followed me.
The shop is not one I visit but the high road was blocked for roadworks.
Parked just off the main road behind a car to reduce visibility.
Must have been a van because bike was locked and i had thrown a chain around the wheel.
I wasn't away long enough for it to get pushed away and believe me I was running down all the nearby streets like a madman before I called the police.
