I always thought the first one was the Light of Bengal in Rose Street.

That would have been late 70s I think.

thanks for reply but there was definitely an indian in holburn st by late(ish ) 60`s. it was the 2nd or 3rd shop just round the corner from union st.
I`ve been racking what`s left of my brain for days and curiously, as I typed the first sentence above, the name " asia kathon " popped up from the depths.
anyone remember if that is the right answer ?

There used to be an Indian restuarant there in the 80s called the Mumtaz I believe, but not sure if that was the one you were thinking of.

The first Indian restaurants in Aberdeen were the one at the top of Holburn Street where the Blue Moon is now, if it's still called that, and there was one on Market street opposite the fish market. I'm not sure which opened first but both were in existence in the very early 70's. A lot of Aberdonians were tea plantation managers who returned to Aberdeen when they retired. Alistair Bruce who owned Ma Camerons
was one and a friend of mine. He introduced myself and several others to Indian food and these were the only two in Aberdeen.

I recall it was called the Asia Kathon (or something similar). Used to challenge the chef to give us hotter and hotter curries. He won! wink

That certainly sounds familiar.
