Hi all,

As a new biker I'm not aware yet, of the rules that apply to bikers in general. Apart from the obvious ones.

I rarely make trips into London, or to places where I need to park in pay and display parking bays, but when I do, I often wonder what's to stop a ticket from blowing off of a bike? Or being taken?

Am I missing something completely obvious? Do bikes have to pay for parking?

I stopped in one bay, and a fellow biker had previously been online to check, and apparently we didn't have to pay? Where did he look online, I can't seem to find it?

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

The parts of london which require you to pay for motorcycle parking can be done by paying online or via the telephone.

My wife has an app (i forget what its called but I can edit this post later!) which lets her pay (has her card linked) and all she did when we rode into london before was put in my number plate and the code of the bike parking bay we had pulled up in. It was quite cheap as well. She uses it for her car in some areas.

Have a look into that; you dont purchase a ticket but you do pay over the phone, or via the app.

That sounds like the pay by phone parking app, which is ideal, I use it for the work vans.

I'm travelling to elm park near Horsham this evening, which is why I ask

Horsham = London?

You should ask for refund on your map / SatNav.

Sorry, I forgot this was PistonHeads, perhaps I should have been more accurate with my description ;-)

I'm not travelling into London, as has been established, but it is a pay and display area, with printable ticket machines.

Hope this clears the confusion up

It's the same here bar London isn't it? Everywhere I've been so far has been ok, obviously make sure I don't block the path.

fking wesons in Brighton decided to ticket my RS on the pavement- locked to my friends wall anchor on his house, out of anyone's way. Fortunately it didn't have UK plates so I filed the ticket in the appropriate area rather than paying it.

Thats a bit wkey. I can understand if the bike causes an obstruction but otherwise it's a bit pathetic.

Basically, bike parking is free with the exception of Westminster. where it costs £1 a day
You're not allowed to park on the pavement anywhere in London, unless specifically allowed to do so, most places outside London also have this rule, but most ignore it

Almost all London boroughs will let you park in residents bays without a permit, except a few such as Chelsea, but they do tend to provide special bike bays (finding a space in one is another matter) check the local council website for the details

Chelsea also have this weird idea of resident motorcycle bays, so watch for those, as using one will get you a ticket if you don't have the correct permit

outside of London most Car Parks are free, with the exception of ones not run by local councils. e.g private ones, where they make it up as they go along

All the airports I've used in the UK provide free bike parking

Metered bays tend to charge if you use them, but why would you when there are free alternates all over the place

Bike parking in Brighton is dreadful. You're liable to get a ticket anywhere that isn't an official bike park. Those in the centre are too few and fill up quickly others are often obstructed by cars. Yet more are regularly allocated to roadworks or similar and used for parking industrial plant etc.

Then on the Ace Cafe Rideout day, the parking attendants ignore some of the most inconsiderate bike parking I've ever seen...
