Is this a good decision? Not as far as I'm concerned. I don't like him on Today and I don't watch Dragon's Den.
He comes across like some overgrown children's TV presenter, his interviews on Today usually give his guests a very easy ride.

He was fine as an economics reporter. I'm not sure he has enough gravitas to be an anchor man on a major news programme. I find his questioning on Today rather scatty and poorly thought out, sometimes.

I agree, he's not exactly one of the heavy hitters when it comes to the awkward interview.

If not him then who else on the BBC payroll?

I can't think of anyone, although Evan Davis didn't spring to mind either!

Replacing Paxman is like replacing Fergie.
Ergo: Evan Davies = David Moyes.

Eddie Mair would be good but wouldn't want him to leave PM.

Peston?

The BBC tends not to admit when they have made a mistake.

I'll reserve judgment, he's probably more versatile that we're giving him credit for - if you're looking for someone's who's already a Paxman, but younger you won't find anyone.

For me, it's important he be himself and find his own way - if he tries to be JP clone it'll be st.

There's nothing that says Newsnight has to be presented by a thuggish, weather hating big noise - as much as we like him.

I've only seen him on Dragon's Den, and his annoying way of repeating what everyone has just said in case we weren't paying attention is the main reason I stopped watching it. So annoying it even moved me to writing to the BBC to complain, for all the good that did.

First rate decision, I would say. And a pity for the Today programme.

Evan Davis has the sharpest mind of any BBC journalist I've encountered. His grasp of economics is first rate. He doesn't just parrot pre-prepared questions; he can string together questions on the fly to pin interviewees down and properly examine their responses. There are very few broadcast journalists who are really capable of that. I've mentioned it before, but he has taken Ed Balls apart on the Today programme. Paxman would not have been able to do the same.

Before Paxman we had Peter Snow and John Tusa. I liked Tusa.

John Tusa was good. His son Francis is a defence expert that pops up now & then on the likes of Sky News.

To be fair, some of what Ed Balls comes out with is so far removed from the truth that anybody who is even half awake should be able to de-construct his outpourings.

Mr. Davis has a good laugh with business cronies on the radio (Bottom Line - not a reference to drugs and bum-banditry) but he comes across as an identikit BBC clone: right-on, androgenous, bland. Big ears too.

Much prefer someone like Jeff Randall or even Rod Liddle.

James O'Brien has been pretty good this week, quite impressed. Shame he won't be getting the full time job.

I still think Evan Davis would be better off presenting The One Show.

Does anyone know who is going to replace him on the Today Programme?

Hopefully someone a bit better at disguising his opinion on things.

Well phrased.
My instant, and less PC response to this news was that a token mong with a twisted face is all very well for crappy bit-parts as a brief slot on a bigger programme but to use him to replace one of the most iconic presenters of our generation is like a bad joke on both the viewers and on him.

Dammit, I wanted Laura Kuenssberg, she's got better legs (yes, I'm shallow).
