Ok, so I have a wired speaker set up in 4 rooms in the house, operating from a amp, hidden away in the corner of the lounge.
I have hooked up the PC to the amp, giving me digital radio (and itunes) throughout the house too, which I can channel to all rooms, or certain rooms using the speaker switch box in place.

The current set up works ok, but with the downside being I need to be in sight of the Amp to control the volume with the remote control and secondly, the PC needs to be streaming the music and occasionally gets turned off.

So, is there way of getting DAB/ Streamed media from my Android/iPad into a wireless device, connected via phono plugs into the current amp?

I was thinking that a standalone unit, offering DAB, wireless streaming connected to the wi-fi network, and controllable by my phone for volume etc (I could leave the amp at a pre-set level and use the volume control on the phone to adjust output) would do the trick.

Is such a device available and at sensible cost?

What's a sensible cost? Something like a sonos connect would fit the bill. Its not DAB obviously but streaming would get the same stations and more.

Cheaper than a sonos (and by some measures and opinions, including mine, superior to Sonos in many ways) you could look at a more geeky option of utilising the Logitech Media Server route and building your own, something like a Raspberry Pi or Beaglebone Black can be turned into an excellent server and Squeezebox player with a little effort.

Is the amp controllable via remote?

If so, get a remote sender for the computer and control the computer over and amp using the sender. All from your phone etc.

I have a Mac Mini and use iRed for the control. You could pop something like XBMC on the computer and you're done.
