I think id rather go for a Excavator.

Id plate armour the cab using car body panels hammered flat, and daisy chain car batteries to weld them into place and then drill holes through them when I find a drill and use various nuts and bolts to fasten them on more securely.

I would sleep in the basket high up in the air so that I get a good nights sleep if i'm out on the road.
I could obtain a spear type device and hover out of reach of the zombies and kill them one at a time in relative comfort/safety.

Caterpillar tracks means I wouldn't get stuck often.

It wouldn't be a vehicle for traveling long distances in, more surviving in a city (going out raiding apartments for food, exploring/neutralising the local area. and bringing them back to my base)

My base would be some apartment complex with the stairs removed, zombies cant fly.
This is actually the best idea ever! Although how long does one of these run for on a full tank?

this one is easy and its a very sensible one - Nissan Xtrail 2.2dci.

Decent Mpg, bombproof, ultra reliable, works if you whack it and can happily carry up 5/6 people (or just you and loads of guns and cake)

James May dropped one of those from the top of a block of flats, and it sill survived.
It survived because it was on top!

Best thread ever! I'm always banging on about the zombie apocalypse at home and how we would be fine as we have my trusty old range rover for when the roads are clogged with people fleeing - we go off road. Orher items which ready us are my Beretta shotgun, the thousand cartridges I always have in the gun safe, a petrol chainsaw and a fray bentos pie that's been in the cupboard for years!

Forgot the BMW, i'm going old school (so long as i have enough petrol to make it to the Welsh mountains!). When the RR's battery died recently, my kids enquired what we'd do if the apocalypse happened now. This did stump me a little as it took me a couple of weeks to get a battery. When one was fitted and it back in the land of the living, my eldest asked if the Range Rover itself was now a Zombie!

Just been reading some highlights of this thread to my wife and and she was surprised how many like minded people there are. Methinks she really thought how many other knobs there are out there.....

Meet you all in the mountains and if you see this on the side of the road, please stop and help!

I speak from direct experience. Also I have personally owned in excess of 70 vehicles, of which 44 have been in the last 3 years and of which 12 of those have been a different variety of 4x4, of which all 12 have been used to get me out of deepest darkest devon through snow drifts - many of which failed.

=come at me with some facts boyo! smile

Diesel Insignia.

The zombies will collapse of boredom at the mere sight of it(if they even notice it), leaving you to clatter away to safety.

I would make my way to Bovington tank museum and take control of a tank or 2 certainly an M1A1 Abrams can run on aviation fuel, petrol, diesel so would be able to fill up anywhere, it's already armoured and sealed plus it has firepower and if I can't find rounds for the guns I can just squish zombies with the tracks.

Also the biggest problem in an apocalypse is abandoned cars on the roads. With a tank I can drive over them, plus most tanks have a hot plate for cooking.

Hmmm, How would you get from the basket to the cab without getting eaten? If there is a crowd of zombies hanging around when you wake up, you're fked.

Hang on, have we decided what kind of zombies we're dealing with? Are they fast movers or the shuffling kind? Might make a difference...

I'm leaning towards a Hilux Surf with big wheels and a sturdy bull bar:

Hard to kill, lots of room, will push through zombie clumps well.

Would like to add this though:

Next up, I think we need to look at buildings and areas that have potential for a HQ.
