Ive just started driving my roadsport 1.8 rover 2006 and Ive not driven it before due to being rebuilt from an accident damaged write off.

The engine seems to tickover at 1500 rpm and hunts plus or minus 100rpm continually also on the overrun, when you take your foot off, in any gear the engine seems to wind up the transmission leading to all manner of clattering and banging from the transmission as the car tries to kangaroo, clearly this is not right or is it ,not having driven a Caterham before I dont know what to expect.

all I know is its an amazing driving experience all the time the engine is pulling!!!

Check the wiring to the throttle position sensor, the wires are know to fracture.
Reset the IACV in the customary way

Ignition on
Five rapid full throttle depressions
Start engine.

I checked under the bonnet this afternoon, just behind the throttle body just were the throttle cable fits on the spool is an 5mm dia air bleed point with a rubber blank over it but the blank was holed. the minute I put my finger over the hole the tickover settled.. so it looks like the airleak was the cause of the fluctuating tickover, I sealed the hole up with insulating tape. I have not road tested as yet so dont know if this will stop the kangaroo antics

Well spotted.. That is normally the vent pipe for the charcoal canister.. Looks like it has been removed.
