Had a bit of an awkward incident today. I work in IT and had someone in HR call me with a problem.

I needed to use remote control software to let me see what was on their screen and to be able to control their computer.

The software we use always prompts for approval before allowing us to view anything so I simply cannot decide to have a nosey at what someone is doing.

Being HR I'm always very cautious about ensuring they have nothing on screen that they wouldn't be happy for me to see so I ask and "Oh no it's fine" is the response.

That's when I find myself looking at a Word document outlining the job contract of the guy opposite me with his salary in big fking bold letters.

I'm really wishing I hadn't seen it tbh, not out of jealously or anything like that as we have different roles, but I still feel slightly grubby about knowing exactly what he's earning.

Shouldn't you report the data protection breach?

Give or take, I think I know most of them. We're in pay bands and it's dependent on performance & how long you've worked there. Pretty easy to work out

No but I'll wager the other HGV drivers earn the same as me and the 7.5T driver earns less because

he isn't qualified to drive an HGV and also because he is always off sick.

All on pay bands in here, so my staff know how little extra I get for the pleasure of managing them. They also know the next gap to my managers pay band is quite a bit larger frown

The leaving present from someone I knew, when he left a large company was to email everyone that worked there a list of everyone's salary.

He used to work in a fairly incestuous industry, then couldn't find a position as no-one would employ him.

I work in the NHS where everyone is on pay bands. If you know what band someone is (which is fairly easy to guess if you know their job title) and how many years experience they have, you know exactly how much they are paid before overtime.

No one seems to mind. I guess as it's equally open for everyone, there's nothing much to hide.

I find it quite difficult to understand the English obsession with secrecy regarding pay. In Italy when you meet someone the first three questions you are usually asked are, are you married, do you have children, and how much do you earn?

Maybe I'm missing something.

When I joined my last company, the external recruiter emailed me an excel spreadsheet with everyone's package details in the UK. Then one of the account managers sent me his contract when I joined.

As we had no IT in the UK (startup), the HR manager would often ask for assistance and once asked me to print a document for him - legal paperwork for someone in another EMEA country doing my role, salary details and all.

When I resigned my manager pointed out I earned more than him rofl

A few years ago, the head of HR accidentally sent around a spreadsheet with everyone's salary on it to all the managers.

She them came around to each of us individually to make sure we deleted it.

What she didn't do was check that we had cleared our deleted mailbox folder... Email got moved into another innocuous folder should I ever need it. Which I never did, so it's gone now.

I don't see why people are so secretive about it. I was on £25k plus commission at my last job. Now on, erm, no, erm, wait, I, erm, really shouldn't tell you. Sorry.

My co got sold when the american owners went into chapter 11 (like administration but not quite).

As part of the court proceedings a list of the management's salary and perks were documented and made available somewhere online.

Of course someone in the factory found it, printed copies for every noticeboard on site!

Not good really, there were a few shockers, it explained a few things (like why some people are complete asslickers), and some of the listings were wrong... which was probably the worst part!

Some I have a fairly good idea within nearest £5k. Others I haven't a clue.

I'm typically British and don't like people to know my salary. On the odd occasion a colleague had told me theirs I've taken it with a pinch of salt (trust no one!).

When I worked for the now-defunct EDS, it was actually a disciplinary offence written into your contract to discuss your salary with colleagues, whether on work premises or not.

I'm in car sales, I know the basic that both my colleague and selling sales manger is on and as we all check each others commission claims for errors etc then we each have a pretty good idea what each of us is earning every month.

I have no idea what they earn in the other departments though.

I know roughly.

However, I'm more concerned at what I'm earning, too many people are obsessed with what others are doing at work.

Yep pretty much know all of my colleagues salaries as some twit from HR forwarded everything non-censored for a National Stats form I needed to complete (I specifically asked for censored information).

However it's not unusual for people who work in accounting and finance to know what everyone is paid. Rule of thumb for my place is the longer you are there the more you get paid to the tune of some extortionate amount (i.e. we have an AP supervisor on £65k who through misfortune got elbowed out of their deputy FC role) which means you end up with a load of older timers who for them it's impossible to leave.

Well in my last job before I became self employed I had a chat with a colleague at salary review/bonus time. I was then called in to the Director's office and informed this information was not to be disclosed to others and should I do so again my bonus would be revoked....

I don't get all the fuss around being secretive over salary. My company is head office'd in Copenhagen and they all openly discuss what they earn, and moan about tax! hehe

I'm on £100k a year and I don't care who knows. :P
