Forget the "ideal" of the Olympics ceremony, you'll either get it or not.

It does appear to be done on a budget, never the less it's not bad.

It'll liven up a bit when wee Jimmy Krankie appears..

Looking forward to the sport.

The opening ceremony was awful except for the two from the Scottish Ballet who nearly rescued the whole thing.

It's pretty shocking it's criminal to be gay in most of the countries competing. How backwards.

Probably because most people forget that the Commonwealth games doesn't have anywhere near the budget of the Olympics.

Was that a deliberate oxymoron?

I think 'most' people don't even know it's happening...

It doesn't have the excitement or the lure of the Olympics or the World Championships, unfortunately.

Look back to the 'Olympics opening ceremony' thread - we must have been on page 20 by now.

Is that why they could only afford John Barrowman?...

The projected viewing figures for the opening ceremony are the same as the World Cup final. One billion. Nearly 1 in 7 people on the planet.

I've just discovered there's a main topic for it that's a few more pages than this one: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

The budget was so low, he didn't even sing in his own accent; instead we got him pretending to be glaswegian and camper than a row of Larry Graysons.

I know he is actually a weegie, but that doesn't stop his accent being st

Cannot get excited about the Commonwealths, just feels rather an anachronism these days and the standard of most competition is pretty poor. Even in swimming, one of the flagship sports, there is just no depth due to the small number of quality nations bringing three swimmers each. Each event has a maximum of only two decent standard heats.

Any major sporting event that features lawn bowls...

Is winning a Commonwealth games medal the equivalent of winning the Sunday football league (insert equivalent sport of choice)?

Jessica Ennis-Hill (England) - Olympic heptathlon champion - had a baby
Mo Farah (England) - Olympic 5,000m & 10,000m champion - illness
Becky James (Wales) - Two-time world champion cyclist - knee injury
Katarina Johnson-Thompson (England) - Heptathlon star - foot injury
Asafa Powell (Jamaica) - Ex-world 100m record holder - banned
