I live in Reading, and have been with three since October (moved from O2).
Their data is great, 4G here, at work in Reading and in the office in London. I've never had signal anywhere where I didn't with O2, and I've never found that I can't call when I want to (unless I'm somewhere that is renowned for having crap internet).
I pay £15 a month for unlimited data and st loads of minutes and texts on their 'One Plan', and for the first few months I was tethered to my laptop and using 30-40Gb. no issues at all!

Another happy 3 customer over here. Very happy with the service and the people in the shops tend to be nice and helpful rather than just pushing you into upgrades etc.
I echo some of the comments about coverage. In my experience it is not as good as Vodafone in less populated areas. Go to www.three.co.uk and look at the online coverage map, it also tells you about data coverage.

i'm with them and very happy. Only deal I could find that was unlimited data AND allowed tethering. No other package offically allowed tethering.
The data speeds are massivly better than anything I used to get on O2. On 4G I've seen 30mb and 20+ up. Way way faster than my home broadband. Just a shame the recepation is weak at home (just did a speed test and got 7.6mbps down and 1.5 up) and virtually zero in our village. O2 is rubbish to though, and vodafone so not really a 3 specific issue...

Don't start me on Three, they are terrible, worst than that. They are the lowest cost data provider offering 4G in many places. I usually use 3-5Gb in a month and in about 4 years of being with them, I had a poor connection for about 5 minutes 6 months ago.
Useless.
I wish I could find a better provider.
I might give EE a try.

Moved from O2 to 3 about 3 months ago. I heard all the stories about how terrible 3 were, but took the leap anyway...
Best decision ever!
I had a new Xperia Z2, £30 upfront cost, £40 a month for 600 minutes and unlimited data/texts.
Signal is no better/worse than O2 and 4G is free when in an enabled area. I actually use 3G over wifi in certain areas of the house due to the router range.
I used their 'feel at home abroad' option at Classic Le Mans a few weeks back and, after a quick call to activate, had no problems at all. It was a bit patchy across France, but completely free so I can't complain.
I've had to call their customer service team twice and they have been excellent both times.
All in all, I'm really pleased with them.

I got an advert for EE in my Twitter timeline the other day, £16.99/mo with 1GB data they were getting ripped to bits by the repliesUseless.

I have 2 phones, both phone 5’s, one is work on O2 and the other is mine on Three so it should be a fair like for like comparison.
I also travel around the UK quite a bit with work.
Be under no illusion, Three is significantly better than O2 for voice call coverage, 4G coverage, speed of 3G and data coverage. You also get to use your allowance in certain foreign countries free of charge.
If I use spotify on my works phone whilst driving around, I have regular drop out of signal. Spotify on my Three phone rarely drops and when it does, it picks the signal up again fairly soon.
I was apprehensive about going to Three and a potentially poor signal but I've found that nothing is further from the truth.
Good luck.

Good post. I think using streaming as a means of measuring the reliability and stability of a signal is good. I also have a Vodafone contract which is very good when its good but for the length and breadth of the areas I travel, it is far short of Three. I also travel around the UK quite a bit with work.

I'm with them, and they're pretty much spot on. Only had one hiccup in service which was caused by something to do with my number porting from Vodafone to 3, and I had a bit of a surprise when I realised they charge for text send receipt notifications (which was in their Ts and Cs, I'll admit I didn't read that far down!)
Getting 4g indoors and out in most places, HSDPA pretty much everywhere else for £15/month. Granted I'm a city-dweller so I dunno how useful they would be out in the sticks, but for my usage, they're perfectly fine.

I tried 3 a little while ago, tempted by the £12.90 unlimted data offer. I cancelled the contract on the first day due to poor coverage, because of the frequency it seems handsets are susceptible to the iPhone death grip phenomemon which means you need a better signal to cope with the loss when you hold the phone. Living in a fairly rural area and travelling the signal was generally very low and pretty much dropped out everytime I picked up the phone to do something.
At work there is a good 3 signal and everything is fine but ste everywhere else I went, so if you have good signal then everything is fine.

Local knowledge is really important when choosing a mobile provider. I switched to 3 18 months ago and it's been awesome. That won't however be the case if you live in an area where their coverage is less good.So what we can confirm, is that 3 isn't the also-ran it was ten years ago. He needs to ask around at work for people's experiences in his area though.
I use T-MOBILE for BB, SAME FREQUENCY AS 3, about as close, but 3 has a clearer line of site from their mast. Both radiate same power from relative similar heights, so, in theory , both sign as should be as good, with T-MOBILE being poorer as their mast is at relatively lower height .
It is also worth mentioning that to get good broadband speed you don't just need good signal but the network also has to be fast with good capacity I.e. It is only as good as the weakest link. So good signal + poor network equals poor performance same as poor signal + good network equals poor performance.
