I am looking at buying a cycle computer and these seem to be the de facto choice.

However, when I read about them, there are way to many accounts of them being a bit flakier than a cadbury's flake in a wind tunnel turned to 11. Is that just the beta test models (aka the first year production) , or are they stable now that a squillion firmware updates have been applied?

Also, is it easy enough to link an HRM to them?

Thanks,

DMN

My son has a Garmin Edge 1000 and he was told to do a software update immediately after buying it. Apart from a couple of routing errors, which is apparently down to OS mapping, it is working fine.

He bought the complete pack which came with speed/cadence sensor and HRM. He did get it a trade as at the time he was working in a London based Cycle shop.

io have an edge 810.

if you are cycling around etc its great, HRM cadance and speed are good. The elevation is a bit off which is annoying.

If you want to follow a route youve downloaded of garmin its fking st.

I've had an 810 for the last year and had zero problems, it's been a fantastic piece of kit.

The comment regarding elevation being a little out is true of all Garmins and is very sensitive to temperature I find, but Strava can correct the elevation if you wish.

I tend not to use the map feature a lot, but when I have it's very simple to follow so what is your reasons for it being st?

I'd say more people on here use an Edge 800.

Early days for my 810 but I agree with the above - uploading gpx files is a nightmare...

Got the Edge 1000 few weeks ago, had a few issues at the beginning, but since updating the firmware it has been much better. I'm still getting used to it, and haven't used it for navigation yet, but the map is fantastic, everything so far is much better than the 800 it replaced, the only downside I've found is the battery life isn't as good, but plenty for a good 7-8 hours, it's just the longer rides that I think it will struggle, so I'm going to get a power pack for these rides.

I find you download or create a file, upload it or whatever and its pretty easy to get onto your garmin and started. now the hard bit..

youll be trotting along and it will tell you to turn off for no reason, onto a tiny path.. now you know the garmin is chatting st so you keep going along the right route. From that point on its a total load of crap.

Ive tried and tried to get the thing to follow a path properly, but its seems incapable.

I found the elevation data to be way off on my edge 810. Did some digging and found the correct elevation of my home and set that in the 810 before going on a ride (found a few elevation points along my route so I could check what the edge was reading at those points too). Elevation data seems much more consistent now.
