SL500 R129 Roof Fault
Discussion
1994 SL500 with a roof fault on closing. Roof lifts as normal but the catches above the sun visors won't engage. This I suspect is then stopping the process and means the leather shelf or roof housing won't close back down and the rear half of the roof, bit with the window in, will not fold in to it's "roof up" position.
Does anyone have experience of this problem or similar?
As a side note when fitting the hard top the above mentioned catches engage without fault...

If the hard top locks down properly the mechanical part of the locks by the sun visors must be OK.
It must be something to do with the ECU ?? it could need a system reset? or what ever its called by your local Merc` Ind`.What you could try is to first disconnect battery, then remove the multi plugs from the roof ECU (under the rear seat)clean the plug and connectors with electrical cleaner, connect it all back up. My local Merc` expert told me about this a long time ago.
My soft top "went funny" the first try this year when I brought it out of winter hibernation after removing the hard top.
All I did was refit and remove the hard top a couple of times going through the full locking and unlocking cycle, then the soft top came back to life and worked properly??

Contact cleaner has been most usefull since owning an R129, I now carry some in my glove box. On my 93 500sl when I close the soft top when the roof engages in the top of the screen I have to take my finger off the button for a second, once I push it forward again the pins lock and the sequence continues.
I think there is a note in the manual about this, from memory it says if this happens to pull the roof down using the handles
