Have about 2/3 acre of fairly rough lawn/field (its too nice for horses, but not quite nice enough to call a lawn).

Looking to spend a couple of thousand on a ride on mower (to replace the secondhand one that was pretty old!), not sure where to start? You can get a new one for that price, or a relatively new second hand jobby,

Any particular makes to look out for etc? general tips?

Countax - great bits of kit. Maybe try a second hand unit first?

Just bought a 2 year old Countax, seem's like a good bit of kit so far. It replaced a Castle Garden which was the worst piece of machinery I've ever owned!
My uncle has a cylinder cut Husqvarna 4x4, it's fantastic and maybe better for rougher areas, also a very quick cut but it doesn't lift the grass which I wanted. It was also very expensive.
Good luck with your search, once you decide lots for sale on that auction site to give you an idea on price, i got a fair bit off my new one by quoting prices from there smile

I went through something similar about a month ago similar size 2/3 of an acre and small orchard. Didn't want to collect grass so went for a mulcher.

Bought a stiga with honda v twin, fantastic piece of kit

have you walked on the grass after mowing? do your feet get covered in little bits of grass?

I have a Countax with a Honda engine for about the same area of grass. Copes with it fine.

We have a 11 year old kubota f1900

Weighs over half a ton

Will tow a couple of ton

Mows anything

Sips diesel

Very little hassle apart from servicing and a wee bit of corrosion in the deck

Cost £1800

Countax = cheapskate st.

Kubota = quality.

Iseki = quality

Hondy Izy = cheapskate st.

Honda = quality.

Flymo = good in it's field. (banks)

John Deere = fair do's but depending on £'s probably rebadged, recycled cheapskate st.

Husqvarna = quality.

Westwood = cheapskate st.

Hayter = quality.

Atco = hmmm still quality.

Dennis = quality.

Ransomes = quality.

Anything under £500 new = cheapskate st.

Toro = cheapskate st.

Friendly Robotics = quality.

Mountfield = quality.

Guess what, folks. You get what you pay for. My recommendation is Kubota for the domestic user, Iseki for the pro 4 acres and above. A Kubota zero turn is hard to beat though.

I don't know how you have come by your opinions. Whilst I agree that Kubota make good kit, it's serious overkill for 2/3 acre of grass. Also, to describe Countax as you do, yet say Hayter is quality seems rather strange. If you judge Hayter to be quality then I feel you are a poor judge.

Based on the last Hayter I had - admittedly a few years ago. Do I now have to put them in the Honda Izy camp?

I would, just noticed you have Mountfield as quality too. That surprises me.

Very much so considering most of their models fall out of the same Italian factory as the rest.

Hi, Sorry for slow reply, no never get bits on feet and dont walk bits into the house.

Difference between a good mulcher and a ride on with a mulching deck / plug

Have a look at the Logic range of powered mowers. The one on the back of the quad is a flail with fine flails which gives a better finish but they also do powered rotary mowers. They can be towed by any vehicle with the towbar.
