Just got called a tosser, not sure why ?
Discussion
Drove at the speed limit through a 30 (on a main road) behind a Saab Estate, was sat a fair way back, went to 40, still behind in the 40 bit, the road opens to two lanes across the lights, which were on red, so decide to hang back and go to lane two, Saab stops and I, because I had hung back kept going, put my foot down and overtook, got to about 50 and then backed off as there are roadworks, a pub and an upcoming junction at which I turn right, Saab come up the inside and driver shouts "Tosser" at me but I couldn't see why, I hadn't had any confrontation or got in his way, could it be just I am in an open Sports Car with a fairly loud exhaust ?

Jealousy, most likely. You got ahead of him. How dare you be in front.

You get all sorts of reactions when you overtake. A lot of people don't like it, even though there is nothing wrong with it. I wouldn't worry about it.
He was behind another car that was turning left so it wasnt a overt overtake, just me not wanting to wait behind, standard practice. It does seem that Overtaking is seen as the work of the Devil these days despite how safe and controlled you choose to do it.
Since getting the Subaru folk automatically assume that because it has a deep exhaust note and a bonnet scoop that you are a Burbury wearing yoof out to cause pile ups and end up in a fireball at the side of the road.
I'm not and enjoy bumbling around in the Scoob around town - onlookers and other drivers just instantly label the car as Chav.
Ho hum.

I think jealousy may be one reason, but i have no idea.
In the 4 months of owning my MX-5 I've been shouted at 3 times now by passing drivers through their open windows. Each time they were driving in the opposite direction, so it's not like I could have provoked a reaction. Leaves me a bit bewildered as to how pathetic they must be to feel the urge to shout...

Maybe he thought you had an emergency hair appointment to attend in the convertible and was jealous of your hairdressing skills!
Next time you should really hang back even further and wait for everyone to get to their destination before these risky right turn manoeuvres.
Pretty soon there will be a campaign to ban turning right although the Daily Mail will be against this as a Left Wing plot.

I can be, no doubt about it, but this time, I was being fairly meek.

I will counter that, by pointing out that I have known you for over ten years and you haven't ever come across as a tosser to me, and Im difficult and broadly unfriendly.

I remember you from Scoobynet days and never had you down as a tosser.

The guy was probably the tosser and it was just jealousy. Not had any negativity in three years of convertible ownership, so was probably due a little, did consider following but what
would be the point, never ends well.
FWIW modern (read 'flash' to lay people) convertibles always seem to bring out the worst in other people. Simply by sitting at the lights you are a 'flash tt'. Drive in an assertive manner and this seems to provoke the hate/jealousy/rage even more.
Drive an old cabriolet. I never got any abuse in the E30. I think people just assumed I was poor driving such an old car (they weren't wrong in that regard to be fair!).
