I'm not usually one to post my first world problems in the police section but this had got my goat a little. I booked tickets to take my daughter to the proms & train tickets to get us to the Albert Hall about 40 minutes before the start.

A train broke down in front of ours & so we ended up having to change three times & take a detour meaning we arrived at the hall just as the show ended. I'm not fussed about my experience particularly & I recognise that unforeseen stuff happens but it was pretty hard explaining this away to a massively let down seven year old who'd been looking forward to the day for weeks.

I guess I'm part venting but also asking I would like some recognition from the train co. for ruining our day - at a guess the best I'll get is a partial refund on the fare & that's it? Any possibility of recompense beyond that? It was all told about fifty quids worth of tickets as I stumped up for family members to go too. They had a bit of a job getting in as I had all the tickets buy the RAH were very good about things.

I travel by train regularly, mainly with east coast and a few colleagues who have been delayed have always got vouchers back off them to the value of the whole ticket price. Write them a letter explaining your situation.

If the train's 30-59 minutes delayed you get half the ticket price for that journey refunded. 1hr+ and it's the whole journey refunded. If you had a return ticket you only get the refund for the leg that was delayed.

Yeah that's what I thought. I'll ping off a letter more in hope than expectation. I really don't need £15 off the train company, but the pissed off factor will make me feel better for getting it off my chest.

Was this for the Cbeebies Prom?

We were fortunate that we chose to drive night before but friends going on South west train had the 11.30 am train cancelled Saturday am due to Signalling issues. next train 1.30pm!

I kid you not apparently they put on a board due to rail works this week trains will be running a few minutes late, they never run on time!

It was indeed the Cbeebies prom. It's a bummer since it's only one day in the year, so it's not as if I can take her next week. Oh well. Nest year we'll drive or take the bus or something.

And people wonder why I think the public transport system in this country just needs chucking in a large skip with the politicians and the unions?

Most companies (and brokers) publish their policy on refunds, eg South West Trains:

http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/ticketrefunds.asp...
http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/compensation.aspx

Not sure you'll see anything beyond the travel costs though and there are lots of get-outs surrounding the cause of the delay but you have nothing to lose by trying...

Good luck!
