I am looking for some advice please regarding replacing the strap on my watch. I bought a Cartier Gents Ronde Solo with a black alligator strap 7 years ago. I called the jewellers I bought the watch from and they wanted £250 to replace it. That seemed rather expensive but looking around the internet, I can only get the strap for £199 at best.

Is this the norm for Cartier or is that a little expensive? I've thought about going for an after market strap but not sure if this is the right thing to do. Can anybody recommend a strap suitable?

I have the product code KD18JT19. The lug width is 20mm and it's a strap band to fit to the Cartier deployment buckle.

Any help would be really appreciated.

The cost is in the material.... Alligator leather is very expensive, even on an aftermarket strap, such as Hirsch. The price of the genuine Cartier doesn't seem too bad in my opinion.

If you are willing to compromise on strap material, then you will be able to save some money.

We can get padded, hand stitched, genuine aligators designed for Cartier deployments for around £120. Don't keep them in stock (they'd cost more if we did!) but can obtain within a couple of days.

They're available in black or brown for 20mm watch heads (18mm clasp):

It's about the right price

You could get non - Cartier in the right size for a wide variety of prices, starting as little as a few tens of pounds but for something that feels the 'right' quality level for the watch, you need to spend at least £75-100 and as another poster rightly comments, it's material based so if you want alligator rather than quality leather, of a reasonable quality, you won't get it that much cheaper even if you go away from OEM

However your other option at the same price is to go down the custom route - aside from Panerai straps (for whom there is a huge market of alternatives), Camille Fournet & ABP, both in Paris, are THE strap makers. For around £200 +/- £50 you can have the exact size, stitch, padding thickness, material, colour, backing, etc and they typically take c. 10-14 days turnaround from ordering to receipt. They are both brilliant (I've ordered several straps from each) and very helpful

Camille Fournet actually make for some of the high end brands including JLC

Your best bet is ABP, Camille Fournet or Jean Rousseau: see the very first post in this thread. All are based in Paris, but Jean Rousseau has a shop in London. You can order online too.

£199 sounds very reasonable.
