Thanks! My current Boardman (2008 road comp- I know, old school!) has Tiagra shifters, so I can't really justify a replacement without an upgrade!

The side exit cables thing really bugs me. Partly because of the lines of shadow they cast across the beams from my XML-T6 lights, and partly because I'm a tart and think cables exiting under the bar tape look so much more....pro!

Now.....a CX Team, on the other hand.......could be tempted!

I was tempted by the CX too, it looks really nice! Figured it's too close to my hybrid comp which I'm probably going to keep, and that having the road bike and eventually replacing the hybrid with a mountain bike when it's done would be better plan.

Time will tell... perhaps just the CX as an only bike would have been a better idea.

You're not wrong, I appear to have just reserved a Pro Carbon SLR which OI had no intention of buying before I saw this thread! It's gonna cost me £1166, which is insane for the spec!

Those of you thinking about the CX Team - ask yourself how often you'll genuinely use it in properly muddy off-road. It has road gearing, lowest ratio 34x32. No mountain-bike style crawling up steep ramps in 28x36... In a CX race you run up steep hills.

Mine has had 23mm road tyres on since February... And I've taken it up gravel paths and bridleways. So I might as well have bought a road bike and fitted Marathon Pluses.

I have had to spend the evening at home repeating 'you have a wedding to pay for' over and over to stop that happening to me

Is the Halfords offer over now? (Sun/Mon on OP)

Saw this in Costco, what do you think of this?

De Rosa R848 full carbon bike £1200 (incl vat)

Would you say the Boardman is much better (if can get offer again)?

The De Rosa in CostCo? Not sure about their specification, but this is the De Rosa 848 available (at the same £1200 price) from Winstanleys...

http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/product/57373/De...

...it's the 2013 model, but look beyond that and it's a brand new carbon fibre bike with 'De Rosa' on the tubes for £1200.

For £1360, Wiggle will sell you this 2014 De Rosa 848 with a 'starter kit' of pedals, bottle, cage, pump, mini tool, and saddle bag, etc...

ETA: There's some chatter out there about bikes at Costco... http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/what-do-you-think...

Interesting, particularly with regards to the gears. I've been considering chopping my Winterised Allez and never-used MTB for a CX. The idea is to have a do it all Winter bike that I can use to do loops with a 50:50 offredfacen road split.

Not looking for really muddy stuff, just the ability to go through some woods if the mood takes.

Could have got another 10% if you bought it with Halfords vouchers. How do they make any money?
How do you get the discount though? I registered on the link you gave above, but when I add vouchers to my basket, it's charging me full price for them.
Sorry i missed that bit. Once registered enter this code.... MCOUNTHal09

full details below....

My £405 Halfords vouchers bought for £364 just turned up special delivery ordered yesterday. This has got to be the way to buy from Halfords, 30% off no brainer.

Loving my CX team, bought it in November last year and put 2500 miles on it in the worst weather the winter had to offer. Discs make such a difference in the wet.

The Wifli 11/32 gearing means that for the vast majority of its life its running in the big ring. 50/32 will get up most things so I basically end up using it as a 1x10 setup with the option of the granniest of granny gears for those moments I feel I need it.

It's been on road tyres for most of its life but is about to receive a 46/36 chainset for CX racing this year.

Genuinely the bike that does everything.

That said I've upgraded mine pretty heavily - still think the original is a great deal but it's transformed by some judicious upgrades.

Kinesis CX disc wheels (700g lighter than the sinfully heavy stock wheels)
BB7r brakes (courtesy of another PHer, they are easier to adjust)
Ritchey WCS carbon Seatpost and Fizik saddle (Saved 500g over the stock)
Rival front mech (that one is essential, the original is a microshift that seems very poor)
Topeak Bar extender (I like the chicken levers but they don't leave much room for lights etc)

Bars and stem are next once I find some ritchey logic 2's on sale...

Don't get me wrong, I like it. It's just not what I should have bought for the use it gets.

Effing BB is clicking badly now too.

Since my surname isn't Wiggins or Froome, I'm really gonna need to change the chainset on the Carbon SLR I've ordered for a compact. Would anyone happen to know the crank length required for the 52.5cm frame?

Meh, give it a go - you'll get used to it! I have the very same bike and (I see you are in Brighton) I got up Ditchling beacon with no problem - previously I'd never tackled a hill that big.

Better to get crank lengths that suit you not the frame, here is a rough guide:

6'0" (1828mm) 177.5mm
5'11" (1803mm) 175mm
5'10" (1778mm) 172.5mm
5'9"(1753mm) 170mm
5'7" (1702mm) 165
5'5" (1651mm) 160mm

I'm 6ft and ride 172.5mm on 2 of my bikes and 175mm on the hack.

Some of the theory about using shorter cranks (145mm eg) is quite interesting.

Was an article in Cyclist a few months back IIRC - but as you say, made for interesting reading!
