One of my door mirror tripods has sheared off and I cannot work out how to remove the it before sourcing a new part - It looks like there is a hex-key grub screw inside but there is no way to get one in there (without heavily modifying the hex key with an angle grinder).

Can anyone tell me the best way of removing the old tripod? If I need to modify a hex key to make a special tool can anyone let me know what size the hex key is?

Forget the hex key, it's virtually impossible to access. Drive out all that remains by putting a long fat screwdriver into one of the slots you can see and tap it out with a hammer. Disconnect the wiring first of course. Rebuild mirror assembly as a unit and screw back into door and reconnect the wiring.
There is a useful thread on here somewhere about repairing the tripod, I'm sending this from my ipad so can't attach a link, but if nobody else does will do tomorrow.

The piece with the slots is threaded, it screws into a captive nut bonded into the door... Use some long nose pliers as a peg spanner to undo it. Once out, you'll spot an indentation where that grub screw locates... Trick is to get that all back so that the complete mirror will screw back in and end up in there right position. I have made thin plastic shims (washers) to get this right before
