Do any of you fine folk use a fitness tracker or wearable of any kind.

I am thinking of investing in the Misfit shine here http://store.misfit.com/products/misfit-shine

Would be good to get other peoples thoughts.

Cheers

Friend has the misfit, however also has a fit bit and he prefers the latter. Me, I have had both a Nike fuel band and fit bit. I also prefer the fit bit.

Although some may say they are rubbish and you need to motivate yourself, I find the wearable health tech does motivate me and give me cause to move and keep active.

It depends if you are after the best monitor or prefer the looks of the shine. This review hints at the shine being less serious than its competition.

I would recommend the Nike FuelBand. I like the build quality and LCD display giving cals, steps, time and fuel points used.

It also does well in reviews for accuracy with a good app and sync setup for PC and Mac.

Only problem with the Fuelband is that Nike has now stopped supporting it and is getting out of wearables all together

That's not quite true. They will continue to sell and support the FuelBand SE

It obviously depends on how into your sports/fitness tracking gadgets you are, but the Garmin Vivofit uploads to Garmin Connect with your other activities and also switches to a "proper" activity recording when it detects heart-rate data.

If you want to keep everything in one place, and have the option to connect via either Bluetooth (phones) or ANT+ (HR straps) then it's a good choice.

I bought a FitBit earlier this week. It's reasonably comfortable to wear although not so much at night as I have a tendency to sleep on my hand. I've set it all up and linked it in with MyFitnessPal and that's working well. I'm not sure that it's measuring my steps accurately as I've been trapped at my desk all week and it's still showing over 2000 steps a day but I've changed the sensitivity now so it may be more realistic going forward. The sleep monitoring is interesting and the dashboard presentation is clear and easy to understand. Overall I'm happy enough and at £69.99 I don't think it was overly expensive.

OK been looking in to this a little more, the two I was originally looking at were
http://www.misfit.com/shine
https://www.runtastic.com/orbit

Then I came across this one which seems to be the daddy of them all, the only problem I can see is they are not shipping outside the US yet..
http://www.mybasis.com/

The mybasis one seems to have a lot more features and the web interface seems a bit more professional with more metrics etc

Give the Fit Bit a crack, and see how you get on. You may, or may not like it. At least you will see what changes it may effect on you.

If you do get a fit bit, someone on here had created a piston heads fit bit group (link on one of my last posts I think)- join up and see how you compare

I also have the garmin fit bit. I like the idea of a 10 year batt life as I know full well I would not bother charging other devices. I never wear a watch so having a clock is handy. Mine is never off my wrist and has only come off via me snagging it on something twice.

Another vote for the garmin vivofit here too. Have it linked to my heart rate monitor rather than my GPS watch and also to garmin connect. This in turn works well with myfitnesspal to track calories.

Thread resurrection warning.

I gave Mrs P a Vivofit for Christmas (it's what she wanted) and having set it up for her last night, I'm thinking it might not be such a bad idea to get one for myself. I'm becoming a tubby tub of tubbiness so hoping that it might motivate me to actually move during the hours or daylight.

Bump, question, anyone know what fitness gadget will measure your:

Walking, running, cycling, swimming etc automatically?

Any why don't they connect to your ankle rather than wrist (ie to detect motion of leg when cycling or swimming)

Are you serious about training for those disciplines, or just for fun? I ask because a fitness wearable like the Fitbit etc are going to be ste for that. You will want something like the Garmin 920XT, which will give you proper information on swim dynamics and will connect with other sensors for power, HR etc.

Wearing it on your ankle will be worthless for swimming as you will want it to count your arm strokes, and I doubt you will get any benefit by it being there for running or cycling either. Plus you wont be able to see it.

Time to resurrect this thread post xmas.

I would like to monitor calories burnt during spinning and gym work etc.
The gym bikes etc are not consistent/calibrated.

Any recommendations for a wearable gadget to pair with my android phone?
Garmin/Fitbit etc

I don't really need gps enabled.

If it is just for gym use then forget the wrist type trackers and just get a proper ECG chest-strap heart monitor like the Polar H10. I've had others from the Nike Fuel band to various models of Fitbit, which were fine everyday toys but not proper training aids. In fact, the final straw for me was that I had to keep removing my Fitbit as it was uncomfortable and kept pausing itself during boxing workouts due to the wraps and gloves. What is the point of a fitness tracker that I had to remove when exercising! The H10 is brilliant. Ok it is not a pedometer so I lost that whole-day activity monitoring but my workouts are now recorded much more accurately. It also has a 400 hour battery life (replaceable) so no more fannying about with chargers etc.
