Noticed that one of the side repeaters on my US car was not working and could not access it from behind the bodywork so I prised it out thinking it was a push and fit job.

Got it working (bad connection) but it would appear that it was stuck there with a layer of formerly white stuff which is no longer sticky or pliable.

Is this something that can be bought as it would seem that it has kept the hole in the bodywork water tight for the past 13 years.

Cheers.

I am probably the last person to give advice.

Is it perhaps some sort of silicone sealant? If so, that's quite easy to get hold of.

Doesn't seem like silicon as it is rock hard and barely flexible now.

Knowing what car it is might help.

It's a Mercury Grand Marquis and the side repeaters are add ons to pass the UK SVA test, which it did back in 2001. I've only had it a week and just noticed that one of them wasn't working.

So it's just a hole in the bodywork on both sides with the lights 'glued' into place.

You're asking what the sealant used was?

Use whatever you want to secure and clean/treat the metal with a rust inhibitor before re-installation. At least that's what I'd do.

In the cold light of day it looks like a sticky foam pad cut to size. Any idea what this may be?

Number plate tape, most likely.

Is it like a bit of the double-sided foam sticky pads that Ikea supply with mirror tiles?

I would personally just put a dab of clear silicone sealant on it and re-set it.

If you're after an answer any more detailed and helpful than "probably a sticky foam pad", a photo might be of benefit.
