I wondered if there were those out there who, like me, thoroughly enjoyed the Hungarian GP, who wanted to talk about the drivers without dissecting their characters from afar, who would prefer to give praise where praise was due, or even might be due, rather than criticise, especially when not due.

I don't expect a GP to be thrills all the way through. However, I got one yesterday. I don't expect drivers to perform to their limits time and again on overtakes without a few mistakes, but that's what we had yesterday. Unreasonably, I want them to drive their cars in the rain, when they can't see bugger all, and do so at speed, especially into the first few corners with cars all around them.

I do expect some entertainment, and by heavens, didn't we get just that.

I'm a McLaren supporter and if, after their disaster of a race I can still come away saying that was possibly the best race of an exciting season then I think others can forgive Hamilton, Alonso and Vettel for their assumed faux pas of the past.

Regardless of whom you wanted to win, that was a thriller. Alonso, Hamilton, Rosberg, Riccardo, Vettel and most other provided a thrilling afternoon's entertainment. I assume that none of these drivers are perfect people, I assume also that they make the occasional mistake, and I expect that most are so far up their own arses that they have to wear a visor over their mouths on a windy day in case they are interviewed, but boy, can they drive and can they excite.

To go off my own topic a little: I bet those who reckoned that the new forumla would lead to unexciting racing are feeling a bit silly at the moment. I know I am.

+1 Derek. Cracking race indeed. Spins and crashes aplenty. Lots of great ballsy overtakes on a track renowned to be difficult to overtake. The DRS was kind of nullified yesterday. How Seb got away from lightly kissing the wall and carrying on begs disbelief. Ricciardo is a WDC in the making for sure and the title race is nicely poised for the second half. Bring on Spa (I can't wait as I'll be there smile )

Yep: only saw the highlights on the Beeb, but very impressed. Cracking race, almost forgiven the drone of the engines!

A cracking race, agreed.

As a Rosberg fan I was a little disappointed in the result but it was such a good race with a proper scrap for 1st which we haven't seen for a while, I couldn't be too unhappy.

Great setting the scene for Spa and the second half of the season.

Really looking forward to the developing st that is going to hit Mercedes after I believe neither team mate is going to give an inch, even when asked now.

Good to see Nando doing well too and even my GF loved Ricciardo winning as he 'smiles so much' hehe.

The crap spouted about Hamilton and Rosberg is getting tiresome, they are both very good in the best cars, lest see what happens at the end of the season and enjoy the racing smile

I liked the following radio exchange after Vettel whacked the wall -

Race Engineer - "Seb, did you touch anything"

Vettel - "No"

I watched the highlights on BBC iPlayer and I have to say it was a brilliant race - one of the best.

On replay it looks like he missed it by the slightest of margins. If there was contact it was the rear tyre right at the end of it's movement so nothing more than a slight boing on the rubber. not enough to register with Seb compared to the violence of the spin. I thought he drove a really good race barring making that mistake.

I meant out of Ros and Ham.

I am a Button Fan first and foremost and a McLaren Fan team wise, so my pain was triple on Sunday, I just didn't want to open the wound of the Inter Tyre decision again.

I thought Vettel replied with "negative"

Agree with the general sentiment that it was a great race to watch.

Must admit I thought Alonso was going to sneak the win - but Ricciardo is pretty impressive.

Great race, I think this season has been great so far. Regarding the DRS, I dont know who else saw it but Sky had an interview with Charlie Whiting who explained that they try and get the DRS zone to allow a car 0.3 seconds behind to be level with the car in front at the start of the braking zone. Thats normally 700m but in Hungary they only have a 600m straight so they were not expecting the DRS to play a huge role in the race.

Merc have said they were wrong to ask, and will re think how they deal with this for the 2nd half of the season ...

I think its going to come to a head and probably near the last 3 races and merc are going to have to make a decision. At the end of the day, merc basically cant lose unless something very odd happens, so if they take each other out, no drama, however the corporate mentality of Mercedes Benz wont want pics of its cars in a smashed heap so they will have to manage this and I feel it going to cause tantrums and smashed motor cars.

Be good fun though.

On the topic of praise where it's due, I'm not a Hamilton fan, don't ask me why just never have been. But I do think his drive was superb yesterday, yes he got a bit lucky with the safety cars early on but, as the saying goes, you make your own luck.
And he capitalised very well on it yesterday.

Given Nico's early pace it does seem like he was nursing a problem all the way through but it certainly doesn't take anything anyway from Hamiltons performance.

Top driving yet again from Ricciardo. He's really showing his worth this season.

How, Fernando? How? He finally succumbed in the dying moments, but jesus that was a drive to drag that Ferrari up to second. Hamilton coming from the pitlane to take third was sensational, and he has been rightly vindicated for his decision not to let Rosberg past. So many good drives it's hard to pick, and many which are being overlooked because their tyres were just a little bit too gone by the end. How about Vergne running 4th all that time and making life difficult for the established front runners? This is a driver who used to keep Riccardo on his toes at Torro Rosso but nobody talks about him. Each safety car was a roll of the dice and unfortunately several good drivers where knobbled by unfortunate timing... but with everybody out of position it was a fantastic race.
I bet Perez isn't flavour of the month, takes out his team-mate and then himself shortly afterwards...

Thanks for starting this topic. Wading through page upon page of complaints was getting me down. laugh
It was an absolutely fantastic race from start to finish. One of the best I've seen after following F1 for the past five years.

I think Hamilton pulled off something spectacular yesterday, and very nearly pulled off something even more spectacular, if it hadn't been for Alonso and Ricciardo spoiling his fun. I'm a Ricciardo fan anyway, so I was thrilled for his win, but I'd have loved to see Lewis take it as I feel as though he has been top notch all season and has had some very bad luck. I'm glad he held his position and didn't pull over and let Nico through. I'd have lost some respect for him if he did that, but he's a racer through and through.

I can really see Ricciardo winning WDCs in the future, he's a superb driver who seems to have it all - speed, racecraft, foresight, and the guts to take an opportunity when it's granted. Not to mention a massive dose of likeability, which always goes a long way. Maybe people won't like him so much when he starts winning more often, though? wink

Rosberg did some amazing things, too, especially in those last ten or so laps after his final pit stop. I was glad to see him not make it on the podium - I don't love the guy, but I don't really have anything major against him, it was just more that it made it a bit more interesting in regards to the championship race.

What a great way to end the first part of the season. I'm gutted that it's the summer break, can't wait for the next race! Although these guys really do deserve a break.

Agree with the sentiments on this threread, thanks for posting Derek.

My big disappointment was seeing JB finishing 10th after he lead ... for a brief time ... frown

Great drive by Lewis.

DR winning, especially as he flew past that red car, capped it off nicely.
