£100K Garage: James Fowler

James appears to like German cars. He really, really likes German cars in fact!

Name: James Fowler
Previously owned: VW Corrado VR6 (brilliant!), Audi A3 Quattro, various embarrassing rubbish beforehand.
Currently owned: BMW 330d M Sport
On the shortlist: "I did want to find a nice 997 Turbo (a manual in black with ceramics) but there didn't seem to be one. I was also going to include an Audi RS6 Avant but I figured the S6 would be 85-90 per cent of the car for a lot less cash."

Audi S6
Cost:
£12,490
Balance: £87,510
Why I chose it: "I've always liked Audis and these S6s seem great value, especially when compared to RS6s. It's still a saloon with a 5.2-litre V10, 4WD and its under £13K! This one's done just under 100,000 miles so is both fresh enough to use without worrying constantly about reliability. It's old and discreet enough to avoid thinking about where it's left, wrong type of attention, people thinking you're a flash git etc."

Porsche 928 GTS
Cost: £34,995
Balance: £52,515
Why I chose it: "I've always loved 928s and for me the GTS is the ultimate incarnation. With just over 40K miles this one is hardly run in and also has a huge history and looks showroom fresh. The perfect car for going on trans European blasts, its involving enough to excite but relaxing enough to not make your bones wince at the thought of a long journey. Epic car for epic drives."

V8 Porsche GTs on PH this way!

BMW M3 CSL
Cost: £29,995
Balance: £22,520
Why I chose it: "On a track day I had a shotgun ride in one of these and the noise, speed, handling as well as the looks all had me convinced that this would be something I'd own one day. Sadly I can't see this happening anytime soon but seeing as I now have £100K to spend this example looks like its heading to my garage. This one looks to be in top nick." .

BMW 335d M Sport
Cost: £11,990
Balance: £10,530
Why I chose it: "This meant to be the (semi) sensible car, although it's both an estate and diesel, I don't think it could ever be called boring. I currently run a 330d and I think its brilliant- very quick without too much effort, makes a reasonably nice noise from inside, great to drive whilst never returning less than 33mpg even when really caned. A 335d should increase these attributes without impacting too much on the running costs. This one looks like a nice spec plus its only £12K."

Find your semi sensible family transport in 335ds here.

VW Corrado VR6
Cost: £7,450
Balance: £3,080
Why I chose it: "I used to have a blue 1994 one of these and always regretted selling it. The looks, noise and handling were amazing and it attracted attention wherever I went. There really rare now and I'd love another. That leaves £3,080 for some fuel."

Interesting but somewhat odd choices but each to their own. I would like to see more functional and fun in one list.

Interesting, but I can't see the 928 GTS being good value at £35k.

Love the 928 - Porsche's attempt to be innovative and stylish.

BMW M3 obvious choice and a good one.

The other three bit ecclectic.

Would take an S6 estate over the saloon.

Corrado for the V6 alone. A real pearl of an engine.

Too much Germany.

each to their own. The 335 and A6 serve the same function?
All heavy cars too, with a fantasy garage i'd put some variety in there.

Top marks for picking the 928. I ran an S4 as my daily for almost 9 years and still regret selling it.

Yes, good ones are now £25K plus, because a bad one will suck your bank account to zero before you get it back into A1 condition.

S6, M3 & 335d? Not sure why you would pick 3 cars so close in use. You would only ever end up using one most of the time. Much better getting a good Porsche to fill the role of the M3 and the 928 and an S6 estate instead of the S6 & 335d IMO. You get so much more car for the money, lower running costs and all three will be used.

Its all personal choice, but this just seems to be a "list of cars I kind of like" with no real thought.

Would you spend the remaining £3k on beige paint?

hehe

Pretty much thought the same thing!

Each to their own though, it's still interesting to see what others would buy with the £100k.

How many cars age so gracefully, and with such enduring appeal, as the 928? Big price on this one, mind.

I was thinking about this the other day actually - I'd just buy a V8 Vantage Roadster in addition to my current garage. Advantage of living in London is I don't need a commuter car!

The S6 and 335d could be classed as similar cars but, an S6 and an M3 CSL could not, unless every car from a German manufacturer with 4 seats is the same.

I think people are being a bit harsh here, that's not a bad list at all IMO. The CSL is a completely different animal to a 335d, and it would cost a much larger chunk of that £100k to get a comparable 911

Love the choice of 928 GTS too

It's more that I can't see what distinct purposes the S6, CSL and 335 serve - I get that when compared to one another they're all a different proposition but there's also overlap between all 3 and if you owned them all I just don't see what you'd use each of them for.

Last weeks fantasy garage was mostly British this one German I know where my £100k would be going comparing the two.

If this is a theme roll on the Italian one.

A CSL is a genuine track day car which can be used for the commute or popping to the shops if you want. It's not comfy or luxurious however, and is very different in this respect to a E46 M3, which could be compared to an S6 more easily. The S6 is a luxury barge and could also be comparable to a 335d.
The distinction seems very clear to me.
