Hey I am thing of buying a Vauxhall astra with 130,000 miles on the clock. Is on a 56 plate. Could it still have a fair bit of life left in it? I think a lot of the miles will be motorway miles due to it begin owned by a rep before.

is petrol yes it has a decent service history, car looks good bar some damage on the back door but this is reflected in the price.

Go and look at it. If it runs OK, has service history, has clean oil and looks good value, then do it. A well looked after car will go on for twice that mileage.

And contrary to badge snobbery, Vauxhalls have perfectly good strong, engines on the whole.

I rented a 57 1.6 Petrol Astra a few months ago (1.6) had 140K on the clock, rode OK but depressing to drive any get up and go it ever had had got up and gone - progress could only be described as glacial and it made no difference if you used all the revs or as few as possible

Pretty rubbish on fuel too

with it being a 1.6 make a large increase in insurance as compared to a 1.2 litre car?

No idea - insurance groups should be searchable on line - but I'd wonder about the driveability on a 1.2 version

Model Insurance Group

1.4 Expression 7

1.4 Club 10

1.6 Club 12

1.6i 16V Club (115ps) 13

1.8 Club 15

1.8i VVT Club 16

think the 1.6 astra does about 42 mpg from what I've searched online

Real world figures may differ

I used two tanks of fuel in the one I hired the first was 33 and the second 35 from memory and that was pretty much all motorway work at 70 - 80 mph - first tank was using more revs than 2nd one.

One of my Astras has 224k on the clock. Ergo it'll be fine.

Are Vauxhalls seen as quite reliable then?

My '08 1.6 manual Astra does about 45 on country roads, slightly less on motorway.

I presume that

A) this chap bought the Astra
B) that it has a hole in the floor pan
C) that it has some rust round an axle

Am I close?

With 11 posts and three threads to check I'm guessing you didn't spend long putting 2 & 2 together biggrin

Alternatively he may not have bought an Astra and it's current car that has some issues - who knows wink

Not really, no. They're certainly not up there with Toyota in the reliability stakes - pretty run of the mill - a lot of people run them with no problems, others hate them and struggle with issues.

I won't deny Vauxs used to rust fairly rapidly back in the day, but a 56 plate ANTHING shouldn't have a hole the floor for many, many years of neglect yet! Except maybe a Ka.

Unfortunately the driving position is to cock, the drive is terrible and the seats are back breakers, other than that..

One mans torture rack is another mans massage parlour

I find my honda civic the comfiest car I've ever been in. The worst car I was ever in was my wifes old mk 4 golf. I couldnt spend more than an hour at a time...a supersports 600 cc motorcycle was comfier!

Her current BMW isnt much better for me either
