Trek X-Calibre 9?

Looking to get a new hardtail with Cyclescheme from work, went to my local bike shop today who sell mainly Trek and Giant, and they recommended the X-Calibre 9 for the <£1000 mark.

Does anyone have any opinions on this, or is there something better out there for the same/similar money? Intended use (and yes I know these are over-specified) is general countryside riding, maybe a few wood trails.

I saw some of the Decathlon bikes were recommended, but I don't have a store near me.

Hope yours turns up faster than mine - I have been waiting a month for an X-Calibre 8, mainly because there were none available in the old version in large frames and the new ones weren't going to ship until this week (seems delayed a week atm - so hopefully next week)
