Not sure if this should go in here or all creatures great and small?

Anyway I'm in Spain at the moment and it was our anniversary yesterday, the Mrs said that she would get me something whilst we're here.

We're near to Alicante so I thought bullfight, I've never been before but really fancy going.

Has anybody ever been and what was it like?

Cheers!

From what I can tell, they're only good when the bull launches itself up and into the crowd hehe

Been many times in Spain, France, Mexico. An acquired taste, like vintage cigars and equally un-PC. Get seats in the shade - sombra

I went several times as a teen on family holidays.

Attitudes were different then.

I'd go to a bullfight now accepting it for what it is, a traditional spectacle .

Don't know how popular they are.

Is this a serious question?

Because legal, traditional, or whatever, it is still fking barbaric and I can't see how any civilised person could support such an activity.

They're good when the bull wins.

That's another option I was thinking about.

It would be more fun running from the bulls.

Unless you're really squeamish, it's one of those things to do you might never get the chance to again. First hand experience is always useful.
As has been said, try to get seats in the shade. And, possibly, a cushion. When we went we found ourselves on stone seating. (1973, so maybe they're all proper seats now)

I have been to a couple and didn't really enjoy bit to be honest, I lived near Alicante for a few years and there will be plenty of local fiestas on with bull running, which is much more enjoyable as its a big fenced off area like an american rodeo and the bulls are let loose into the ring with the locals, who try and dodge out of the way, no animals get hurt, some of the locals do, its good fun.

Dodgy knee I'd have a distinct disadvantage!

I went to one once, in 2007. It is barbaric, no question, but strangely somewhat compelling. Very much an acquired taste as a previous poster mentioned.

We were the only ones cheering for the bull though smile, I was hoping to see the matador get it, sadly it's very much weighted against the bull, although it's impressive to watch the bull lift the horses off the ground when they pin them against the wall (Horse wears a protective coat, although looks terrified).

It's not something I'd personally want to go and watch again, but I think it's something you have to make your own mind up on.

Why would anybody in their right mind want to go to a bullfight?

Your knee would be the last thing on your mind while being chased by a bull biggrin

Curiosity?

My best pal went to a cockfight in Costa Rica and he's an animal lover. It's good to experience things, good and bad, when visiting other cultures.

He said he found it pretty horrible but fascinating.

Perhaps not. In my wives village they shut off the entire centre during the fiestas, and, twice a day, they let young steers loose in there. You can either run in front of them, or go out in a 'Carrito' which is like an enclosure on wheels. You'd be reasonably safe in one of those!

If you're out on foot, it's perfectly acceptable to run into anyone's house, or their 'Corral' (yard), if you feel that the steers are too close, always running the risk that they'll throw a bucket of water over you for being a wuss.

One of my overriding memories is seeing one of my brother in laws hurdle a six foot fence practically without touching it, with a steer up his chuff.
