A friend had an overheating problem at the weekend when his otter switch packed up and the fans wouldn't cut in. This occured in traffic after an 80 mile blast up to Siverstone. Long story short, engine cooled, switch was bypassed, fans ran constantly, problem solved. This was on a T reg Chimaera.

Note to self; carry a spare fuse or patch lead to 'jump' the live and earth wires in the event that I should suffer the same fate. So I looked for my otter switch last night and couldn't find it. The T-reg had it in the radiator, near the bottom on the passenger side, rear facing. My 98 car (full face lift, etc.) has nothing in this location. Where is it??? Has someone stolen it? smile

I'm sure an exhaustive search would turn it up but last night the engine was hot, the roof was off and it started raining. Looking for an elusive otter switch slipped down the list of priorities...

you may also want to look at fitting the two stage cooling kit that Mod Wise (aka Dave Beer), I have one fitted to my chim after sitting in traffic in the heat and waiting for the gauge to show 92c and for the fans to then cut in. I wanted to be able to control them so that they came in a bit earlier.

or you could do what I've done.. buy a stat (maplins / RS etc) or get a free sample from some place wink
take a fused feed from the starter or battery.. through the stat and onto one of the fans... same thing for about £4.50... works a treat....
manual stat set to 87 ish.. otter there at 92 as last defence... smile

No relay? Don't those fans pull a load of amps? What's the stat rated to?

Or you could run a feed to them using the rear wash wipe switch on the stalk to turn them on and incorporate a light into the unused bulb holder in the bottom of the rev gauge to tell you when they're on.

I fitted the cooler Otter switch

standard 95 on 88 off

I went for 92 on 87 off

Next job was to fit an over ride switch wit heavy duty cable and a quality switch ,never needed to use it .

2000 model has it on upper passenger side of rad.

To short it all you need is a paper clip between the two female spade connectors.

Clean all the connections first because these are more likely to give you problems and stopping the fans from cutting in.
