on the other hand slate looks like slate looks like slate. What would happen if you don't seal it? It gets wet when quarried, and yet looks ok when you receive it. What can possibly happen to it?

I say don't. A bit like that crap people coat their driveways in - ridiculous imo.

Thanks furtive but sometimes there is too much information!

Im none the wiser so far. Does anyone know the consequences of not sealing an external patio?

I think it is more likely to stain if something gets spilled on it
