What have you done to your car today......

Decided to go for a drive this morning (very unusual for me at this time of year), so headed for Wheels in Motion and got them all balanced. I'd noticed that the weights had fallen off the rears at least (I hadn't checked the fronts) so it needed to be done.

Then thought it would be a good idea to replace one of David Brown's glassfibre filters with a new one, and I also tipped £100 worth Motul 300v Chrono in to the sump. That smarts a little, but I really feel the engine deserves it. The new magnetic sump plug had somewhat more on it than the sump plug from my 928, but both could be described as a light dusting rather than anything more substantial.

Now toying with the idea of Snetterton tomorrow, but showers forecast from 1pm onwards so not entirely sure.

Had a new exhaust made to quieten - yes I really did say to QUIETEN - the thing down. I didn't enjoy driving Mr Shouty either in town where everyone stares, or on the motorway where my brain was being rattled in my skull.

Very impressed with the quality and speed with which Infinity Exhausts (nr Bath) welded in an all-stainless crossflow centre box, and twin in-line silencers at the back. Cost £450 excluding the tips which came from a 2000 DB7 and are lovely 8" long minature glasspack silencers with rolled tips. (The U-clamps are coming off once I drill out the original flat clamps and put new bolts in). I asked them not to be welded in place so I could play with the angles.



I asked how many people ask them to make queter systems and the bloke said "not many, but we do get TVR owners coming back because we've made them too loud!"

Now I really gotta get the laptop lead sorted, buy a carb synchrometer and balance my throttles. Idle is slow and it's over-fuelling and mis-firing. Also my legs were freezing on the drive. Must sort out those air leaks in the footwell.

I totally understand, I've spent the last three years trying to quieten my car, hampered somewhat by a limited budget. Dumping the Sports Tails has helped, but not finished the job. Hopefully these will shave the last couple of dBs off to get me under 105, I may find out tomorrow if I end up at Snetterton.

To me it's quite a lot to do with the cerbera being the most "understated" of the late TVRs (IMO) and a big shouty exhaust just doesnt fit.

The aston tips are lovely little things and actually very effective mufflers. My friend's twin turbo DeLorean has only those and it's quite civilised. The ones I just used came from Ebay for £65 and a lot of elbow grease and metal polish later look as good as new.

Over the weekend, using my new synchrometer, I adjusted my throttles - 1 & 2 needed a whisker more, (jeepers the screw is sensitive!) though pretty even across the board, and overall tickled up the idle speed. Then with my newly made up ECU lead, reset the throttles and the adaptives and came away thinking my lambdas are out of whack and/or they need a unique ground.

I have billows of vapour coming from the exhaust and she smells rich, yet lambda 1 reads 0.06 and lambda 2 reads 0.62 constantly at idle with the adaptives climbing rapidly (engine getting more lumpy), yet blipping the throttle sees the lambdas jump to life. Not had a chance to road test, awaiting the leads needed to use RS-AJP. One for next weekend.

Also started swapping out the top-of-the-engine capscrews for A4 stainless ones (mine were all rusty).

Went to my mates barn where it has been living since early September, made sure he had not sold it! Connected the battery and it burst in to life. Let it run up to temperature all seemed well, nice and clean under its cover.

Till next month or so, all is good this winter for a change nothing much to do.

As the sun was out it was time for some cerbera therapy after 13 days straight at work,
Got it out the garage to a puddle of something on the floor , opened the bonnet to see fuel p"""""g out from various places in one hose from the fuel rail. ( speed six )
Having just ordered a set of coolant hoses from ACT does anyone know if Tim does a set of coloured fuel lines to match?

bright and sunny, took mine out yesterday having run it into work a couple of times last week. Lots of elderly couples out in their cars at 20-30mph.

Those on the Facebook group will have seen these, but I popped outside to give the car a clean last night. It's road legal but not going anywhere for a while due to a vexing running problem (been waiting since first week of November for those throttle pot bearings from ACT) and mud everywhere.





My newly repaired ECU is waiting to go back for another look because it runs worse post-repair than it started. However, it's now misbehaving on the borrowed 4.2 ECU it used to run fine on so I think there's an underlying issue with the car. It's creeping ever closer to the point where it just gets dismantled although I can't really afford that this winter due to a staggeringly expensive year all-round.

Looks great! Shame about the running issues, but i'm sure you will work it out with all your knowledge. I have zero ability with car outside of changing lightbulbs and other simple tasks, so if mine was a non runner I would probably just go and sit in it and make engine noises until I could afford to send it off to Jason.

Still jealous of all that space in your garage!

Swore at mine repeatedly. Clutch fluid all over the front face of the gearbox so it looks like the slave cylinder has gone. As I was planning on getting the engine out this winter to replace some heatshielding, have a good look at the chassis and probably a few other odd jobs its now on axle stands as I try and work out the easiest way of disconnecting everything to get the engine out. Looks like the simplest way to disconnect the clutch pipe is at the drivers footwell bulkhead, however the power steering has me completely beaten. Anyone who's had the engine out got any advice?

Never really pulled the engine, but the PS hoses must be the easiest part of the job. High pressure is a banjo on the PS pump, and low pressure is just a push fit with hose clip, shown bottom left.

Mine still has borderline clutch issues. I want to use my AA parts and labour cover, but technically it still works so not a breakdown I can claim on. Not used it for a couple of months Probably it'll have no clutch next time I get in it, in which case I'm calling them to take it somewhere...

Well, there's a few paint issues that the shop are going to sort out at the end of the month, and came home to a PAS fluid leak....but on the whole YES!
