Hey Chris, I'm no expert but with your experience you're selling yourself short as a roustabout, although I appreciate the potential career ladder > toolpusher and beyond.

You could try going straight in as an electronic engineer/offshore engineer. Good luck.

Hey Chris,

Ill be in your position in about a years time, have you registered with CTP? I know they have a scheme you sign up for and the big players such as Petrofac / Wood Group PSN shortlist you to go do a 8 week crash course so to speak to become a Instrument Tech, i know those two favour ex forces and many of my Shipmates have gone through them and are now in the North Sea.
Theres a O&G expo in Aberdeen on 7th Oct you going?? Have you already been to one?

Not sure about branch structure in the RAF but in the Navy we have Facebook groups set up helping out people of my trade to get into O&G.. Do you have the same?

A lot of the companies recommend doing Compex as part of the resettlement package have you thought of doing the same?

Get yourself on Rigzone/OilCareers, try even phoning Petrofac HR office, a guy in my office did this last week and got an interview.

Just trying to be constructive otherwise i would of end up of throwing some crabfat banter around ;-) but your right, it does help to know people, I'm fortunate a close family friend is an Offshore Installation Manager and banking on him getting me 2 weeks work experience with the possibility of job offer at the end.... Anyway roll on next month when ill be on JPA and doing the 7 clicks to freedom.

Yea last3 recruitment got in touch and said i need to do Compex for the role i was looking at (Instrument tech), my Resettlement office is in Pompey, i will try and get to the 7th event (may be at sea though), are there any more later in the near/new year that you know of?
It must be possible to get that first start, i see shed loads of guys on facebook who ive served with who are now offshore, so i have faith next year when its my turn,
You not claming back all the money you have spent on courses from your ELCAS?

Ill happily work on a boat or a rig, which ever comes first, when we have our notice in we can still be deployed, i just want to have it in before Sept as come next Sept the ship is going away for a 9 month stint, a little too long for me without seeing home.
Even if i put in for resettlement leave it has to be approved by the CO, so chances are.. And i know what the programme is they probably couldnt do without me as im the only tech for all the Comms onboard which is alot of real estate.
Our Resettlement office do get quite a few people through wanting to go offshore, so i'm hoping they will be able to help.

If you havent already done so I would advise getting your CV into service companies, your background would be usefull for many of the services they provide.

I'm attending that careers fair too on the 7th in Aberdeen. Looking forward to it. I'm not banging my PVR in yet until after the fair, more due to dates etc. Looking at leaving the RAF June/July next year unless this careers fair changes things.

I'm looking at being a FSE or going into wind turbines with Siemens hopefully.

Look at Caprock Communications by the way. As my mate mentioned they were hiring at the moment, when I was chatting to him about jobs/career etc as he is a Subsea Controls FSE.

Back to satcoms, OP. Have you approached Spectra in Herefordshire? They do a bunch of satcoms stuff and employ a lot of ex military folk (mainly 264 & 18th from Credenhill)
