What is strange is that I was reading the consolidated 991 RS thread on Rennlist, and there, lo and behold, was the Drive video on the Camaro vs RS.2 that was apparently behind the paywall, but has already appeared on Daily Motion....go figure.
It is why the donation button as mentioned by dudleybloke just up the page is probably a more realistic business model than monthly subscription; it would allow the original YouTube video to be linked along with the donation button rather than a pirated version which is almost impossible to stop as the legal costs of chasing all perpetrators could outweigh the genuine income received. It shouldn't be that way, but it almost certainly is.
DMCA = free or the cost of an admin bod to do it at wht £15k a year? Surely if the loss is that great his salary will be recovered.

Money = taken. Product delivery = partial/pending. Social media response to customer worry, patronising.

It's a fantastic business model. The customer is always wrong.

Lets see how well it works.
If cmoose could get his head out of his arse for five minutes he mgbt eventually notice this is the underlying point.

I think he's just enjoying his 15 minutes of attention.

I was thinking that it would be a constant battle to stop piracy across all of the potential places the videos could come up. A lot of the time there would be a positive response from those sites who find themselves hosting videos illegally - it could take a lot of time but generate no direct return.

I loved their first album. I thought the second had far too much of a commercial leaning.

That charger on gravel was quality! It was a massive ad for Subaru, but to be fair the didnt try to hide it Freiberger even said "we spent Subarus money on fixing some of our cars".
It did jar slightly but sometimes I guess you have to do these things in order to keep it free. I'm not quite sure what Subaru got out if it, typical Roadkill viewers aren't likely to be interested in the Legacy really, are they?
Nope, and i'd rather the BRZ or new WRX was showcased... Oh well.

He also posted a second tweet regarding some youtube "watch offline" feature. Wonder if the two solutions are related, i.e. to let youtube bypass some international media laws by offering the files as a .zip download.

That appears to relate to something YouTube are doing in India as part of the offer they have. Whilst there is plenty of software available to download YouTube video already I'm not aware of a YouTube official version. Surely all it will do is make it even easier for the videos to end up on other sites so they can be watched without the paywall.

Unbelievable quote from the BBC news website:

"Not only will it cost more money to play the game it will cost people their jobs too. Many people play Minecraft and upload it to YouTube as their career, but if Microsoft takes over there will for sure be copyright issues."

Ok, his overheads may be a bit more, but Chris Harris must be doing something wrong if sad teenage gaming geeks can make a living "commentating" on some kid's computer game, yet he can't make it happen.

Or maybe it's the fact that Chris Harris is a sad car geek and there are just not enough of us sad car geeks to go around.

TBH, I'm a sad car geek and despite him being a great car journalist, even I found Chris Harris a bit boring on video.

Why does every car journo seem to want to be on Video these days? As this thread shows it is not making any money - It's as if, as they are not good enough to be on TV, they have to make their own shows on the internet to massage their vanity - just the next step up from all the other wannabes that post their crap on You Tube constantly.

Why not just stick to writing if it makes the money that has been used to fund making the car videos?

I'd imagine that filming fast cars going fast on a track/on the road costs a bit more than someone with a mic and the ability to capture video from a game.
There are a lot of overheads - cameras, rent of cars, insurance, the crew, fuel etc etc. Kids 'making a living' probably amounts to less than £15k p/a (which wouldn've been fantastic when I was 15) whereas Chris and the others probably need to earn a lot more than this...

This is an example of a YouTube gamer, 'PewDiePie', who is the biggest success of all, I understand.

http://www.youtube.com/user/PewDiePie

He gets 50 million views per week. He has 6 billion views in total, all by commentating on games.

Drive, in comparison, with its staff, production costs etc has had 200 million views in 2 years or so.

Mike Musto's latest film, on DrivePlus, has 4,000 views. It looks like Drive subscribers are either unsubscribing or only watching Chris Harris videos. He gets between 10,000 and 14,000 views. Unfortunately, it looks like Drive is really going to struggle.

Content is King. No. On the web, it looks like Free Content Is King, unless you're offering something really unique/desirable, like the Financial Times / Netflix does.

I wouldn't want to be the trendsetter in the current struggle to directly monetise content on the web.

Personally, I think Harris has enough ability to carry a channel on his own and package it very cleverly to sell other goods.

I do think that he could raise enough money via a crowd funding model because he is known and is popular. And I do think he could easily create a series of related packages to sell within and also alongside the crowd funding element.

Strangely enough I'm more likely to bung someone £50 to help start up their business than I am to buy something off them for £50 and crowd funding has shown that this isn't uncommon.

If he is getting more traffic than the others and the model isn't working then the sooner he joins the Judaean People's Front the better.
