Mercedes S-Class Coupe prices confirmed

The range starts just below £100K and then goes quite a long way above!

Nothing like being proved wrong, is there? When Mercedes announced the S65 AMG Coupe a couple of weeks back we suggested it might be in the region of £150K. Its nearest 600hp+ 12-cylinder rival, the Bentley Continental GT Speed, is £152,600 and so there was some logic to the conjecture.

We were out. Way out. Order an S65 and it will cost £183,065 before options (more on that shortly). When you're checking the price of a new Ferrari FF by way of comparison (£227,142 FYI) you know a car is jolly expensive. Still, an obscene price is as per for a V12 Merc (the SL65 is £170K) and it's unlikely to put too many prospective customers off. Those after the most powerful and fastest will get it you suspect.

At least the S63 AMG guesstimates were in the right area, the £124,715 list price bang on the £125K predictions. It is 45hp and 74lb ft down on the 6.0-litre AMG but then 585hp and 664lb ft should do the job for most. The S500 will be added early in 2015 at £96,565.

Mercedes has listed prices of a few S Class coupe options also. The AMG Exterior Carbonfibre Package is fairly self explanatory and adds £5,000. The £765 AMG Night Package finishes the exhaust in black chrome and adds more black around the exterior.

Pick of the range perhaps?

For your passenger's enjoyment, how about the panoramic roof? May as well add the rear fridge for them too. That's £4,030 and £1,130 respectively. There isn't a price yet for the carbon ceramic brakes but given they're £7,090 on the saloon we'd assume a similar premium for the coupe.

Of course being a vast, fast Mercedes will mean fearsome depreciation. This previous generation S65 saloon is for sale at only £45K after 25,000 miles. How long until the new coupe is down there?

As soon as you starting getting above £150k, the limiting factor in being able to justify such prices will be the Mercedes badge on the front. The S65 Coupe is probably the best engineered coupe in the world but it can't compete with the brand catchet of exotica like Ferrari & Bentley.

I think they appeal to rather different markets. Some people will simply want the best car they can get and will rather like the relatively understated image of "just another merc".

Whilst on paper it may look very similar to the FF in terms of a GT car; they're actually quite different in reality. The Merc will be far more geared towards relaxed wafting and less sporty in nature compared to the FF.

For what this Mercedes is for, it's the better car over the FF without doubt. For what the FF is for, it'll be the better car. Likewise, this will be a better car than the Bentley.

I agree about the badges, but some people might quite like that it isn't quite as "hey look at me" as a bright red Ferrari.

the thing is, many who by this car wont be making the choice between this a bently or an FF. They would just buy them all.
and if the FF harris ran for 6 months is an indicator i bet the merc wont leave you on the side of the road twice.

So what's the difference between the S63 AMG and S65 AMG coupes and the CL63 AMG and the CL65 AMG? Priced £118,885 and £164,940 respecively.

The engine being one. The V12 in the '65 also comes as standard with upgraded quilted leather a few other bits and bobs. The V12 is also geared a little more towards smoothness than the V8 in the '63 as well.

Isn't it that the CLs are the outgoing models and the S coupes are the new ?

Wow.. The 65 is a right chunk more than the 63.

Some people will just buy the 65 regardless (more money than sense) but I can't help but think it needs more power to justify it's premium. Like 680-700hp.

Yes, I thought he was asking about the difference between the 63 and 65 models. Thought everyone knew (after a few articles on it!) that the S class coupe was replacing the CL.

Is it not a full class above the 6 series?

Not exactly unprecedented... And does mean potential bargains in 2021.

Yes. The CL63 and now S class coupe has only once been rivalled by BMW in terms of market position, and that was the 8 series.

Hmmmm bit steep isn't it, there is a lot out there for that money, maybe they are just aimed at the Middle East? Never been falling over the previous ones in the UK and it doesn't look likely to change!
