Refitting 2.7 Diesel Oil Filter Element

When refitting the paper oil filter element the Jaguar S-Type Workshop Manuals shows it should first be located into the black plastic canister and then screwed back onto the housing. However there is an O-ringed protrusion on the element which need to line up correctly and one website recommends not to put it into the canister but to push new filter into housing on top of engine then screw on the canister.

Which is best or is it the same either way?
