I drove from St Andrews to Elgin on Sunday. It's not really a road I'm familiar with and have only driven it a few times, but it seems decent enough. Plenty overtaking opportunities, good sightlines, and is in superb condition compared to most up here. It did get a bit foggy and wet in some sections but nothing exceptional.

The ASCs just seem to be a waste of time. There were still people pootling along at 40 or 50 who could frustrate, and idiots will still commit dodgy overtakes regardless of the cameras as their average speed will still be low...

Money would be better spent elsewhere if you ask me!

So far, all I can see is that SPECS have increased driver stress, reduced traffic spacing and increased journey times.

How long before front number plates become very dirty or prone to falling off?
Do they only capture front plates? I thought they covered both ends? I only ask as if just the front, it might tempt me back onto my motorbike.

Technically speaking (from a position of gross ignorance) surely they'll capture the rear plate on the single carriageway sections...? As both lanes are covered, if it's ANPR? Otherwise you could avoid them by reversing through biggrin

Although, if you go thro camera B, then camera C will expect/measure you, and camera A probably isn't on anyway.

I've confused myself. What was the question!?

silly

Oh yes, they're designed to be front facing but the ANPR might work the other way too is what I'm saying.

Seem to recall reading they had installed forward cams as well to clock bikes, anyone else recall this?

I had read about ASC's for bikers too but not sure if they're the type being used on the A9 as I believe these are an older design...

Apparently some of the cameras have been positioned to read rear plates..

Driving down last night it is possible to see a red glow coming from some of the cameras - a sign of which are on and which aren't? Can anyone confirm?

Can't confirm, but I've noticed. Coming from the Dunblane end, I've noticed the first set doesn't have the red glow, but after the A9 cameras are now in operation sign, I can see the glow. Someone want to confirm by flying through the first set? All in the name of science of course hehe

I've driven Aberdeen to Glasgow and back a number of times since they turned them on and I continue to be amazed at the general public's ignorance regarding these cameras.

On every occasion I've set my cruise control to 78ish and have NEVER been overtaken other then when accelerating away from a roundabout. When I am overtaken I inevitably pass the overtaker a couple of miles along the road.

Faster/slower? No idea! But I get a clear run at my chosen cruise speed so I'm guessing a bit quicker.

Aren't some of the sections 60 mph?

I've no idea on the speed you'd need to do to get caught, I thought 78 would be a bit borderline. I set my cruise to 72 and I still pass everything.

Assuming it's 78 speedo then that's likely 75 gps and you'll probably get 10% +2mph so should be fine!

Now you have me thinking, from Aberdeen to Glasgow only puts you on the A9 from Broxburn junction until you join the M80. That stretch is dual carriageway, so question is did they erect average speed cameras on this section?.

I always thought the problem was Perth heading north with all the single carriageway.

Yes, there are cameras on the dc from Broxburn to the M80. What do you mean that's not the dangerous bit? Speeding is always evil, dontcha know?

I only use that road once a year when I drive from Aberdeen to London, travel during the day, so probably don't notice the traffic that much.

Always stop in the Little Chef for a cuppa. Drive on cc at 70.

It's our first stop after leaving Aberdeen, next stop Carlisle, (off the M6, never use motorway places, rip off merchants), pity the northbound one shut. Take it easy and watch out for those pesky cameras.

Just in case wavey
