Used admiral for years, currently insure my 911 turbo with them (albeit through elephant.co.uk). Great company.

I didn't think they would cover cars over £50K.

The main downfall with Admiral (and their group - elephant, bell direct, diamond etc) is their policy on "modifications". Factory options are classed as modifications so you must specify and they will charge you extra for them but, and here's the rub, they won't cover them in terms of replacement.

For example, when I bought my boxster I had (amongst other things) leather seats and 18" wheels specified as factory fit options - they classed theses as "interior modifications" and "optional alloy wheels".

If I had crashed and bent a wheel then they would have only paid out for whatever comes on the car in base spec from the factory - in this case a 16" wheel, I would have to pay the difference between the 16 and 18.

Also, in the event of a complete write-off they would not pay out the full retail cost of the car (£38K), they would only pay the cost of a base spec model (£31.5K).

Yup, they came through for me when T***os decided to withdraw my insurance after two months because I couldn't transfer a NCB to the 911. Admiral dug out an old policy that I had previously transferred to another insurer and gave me 7 years NCB on the 911 which was nice.

Admiral paid out without too much hassle when my TT (Audi not Porsche) got nicked a few years back. I now use them through Elephant and they're very helpful on the phone as well.

One thing to consider with elephant.co.uk (which I found fecking hilarious), use the PHONE! Forget trying to communicate with them over the web.

I emailed them for some assistance and after 48 hours of nothing I called. Relating my email to the girl on the phone she informed me that they were "actually an internet based company.". I paused expecting her to say that they are really geared up to communicating over the web, and can't understand why my letter had had no response. When in fact she said.....

"So, you'll understand that we do receive A LOT OF EMAILS!!!!!!!!"

Simon you just reminded me when I recently changed the car on my policy with Admiral. I asked them if they could email confirmation of the amended policy to me seeing as I would have to wait many days for the new policy to arrive through the post. She said "Oh, we don't normally do that, let me talk to my supervisor". They did it though.

I doubt the post office would have taken it though!

Thanks guys for your help appreciated, keep em coming.

The one thing I wasn't sure about was, should the worst happen, will they pay for an official OPC repair, or make you use a cheapo place affecting the cars value?!

Leo, the post office would have taken them.

My certificates are printed .pdfs, no problems.

You can have your car fixed WHEREVER you want. The insurance company will try all sorts of tricks, but it is your right. They can however decline a courtesy car if you don't take it to an approved supplier.

Just as a matter of interest, I tried Liverpool Victoria, who many say are "good & cheap", they won't now insure any car with a sports exhaust, so wouldn't quote!!!

reported them to the ins. ombudsman over their treatment of my theft claim for my M3 (which the police had found). Wouldn't touch them with yours...

Unknowledgable claims staff in my experience.

Sadly yes, a fair way north of 30, why do you ask have you got other options?

no other options, just that I know LV are sensitive to under 30's. I've heard differing reports about LV and modified cars. Some say that unless you up the CC LV charge nothing extra while others say the opposite.

I have a standard 993 turbo and the premium with LV is £750 full comp including courtesy car, protected NCB and unlimited mileage.
