Could try ringing round some of the larger museums - although if they are common medals they probably already have examples.
If they belonged to a local and you have some additional information/history or an interesting story to go with them - you could try local museums or even the town hall.

Be aware Museums may sell them ! This has happened to us, medals a painting etc, now no sign of them or record either.
Wasn't aware of that. Some information here:http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/support-us/donate-an-a...
Interesting! His daughter did (try) make a date to go and see the items a few years ago, that's how I found out .
As footnote some years ago I knew an odd chap who ran a small private WW2 aviation museum and he told me his best hunting ground was the skip at the back of Hendon ! He may have been right as I got a blue pilots type log book containing extracts from Sqn Ldr G A Butler CO 11 Squadron from another skip sometime later, it's a copy but hey ho. What is not a copy is the recpt from Gieves Ltd for his pilot officers uniform in 1941 £28 15 shillings and 8 pence, that was inside it.

Is there anywhere that will take WW1 medals?
Or what can I do with them? They are not 'mine' to keep.
Whose were they, do you know? if you know who they belonged to the regimental museum may take them - especially if you can piece together the individuals 'journey*' through the war. (I detest that word in this sort of context but I can't think of another at the second). Especially if there is anything interesting above campaign medals.Or what can I do with them? If worst comes to worst and you do end up with selling the only option, maybe donate the proceeds to the Royal British Legion?

They aren't particularly interesting, and the holder survived the war, don't think there's much 'unique' about them. Feels wrong to sell them as I would never sell my great uncle's medals (but as he was killed maybe it's different?).If worst comes to worst and you do end up with selling the only option, maybe donate the proceeds to the Royal British Legion?
I suppose selling and giving proceeds to RBL is the best plan.

Perhaps donate them directly to RBL - they may find a use for them - or if they do sell them, they may be better placed (contacts etc) to get the best price.
Aha! Look what I found.http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/remembrance/ww1-ce...
