No complaint about the choice of car, I've had plenty of Golfs in my time. However, they all came with the correct engine (well, apart from the 8v GTI, that was terrible), which was my query about the OP's purchase. Even at 600 quid extra a year for the GTi, 50 quid a month not to drive a diesel? Bargain imo.
It's at least £80 a month more to lease, plus £50 a month more to fuel. That's over £3k more over the term of the lease.

Correcting my original sums for VAT and I make it 2k (assuming the previously claimed 30mpg GTI and 45mpg GTD).

I don't get it. A GTD costs £250 per month inc. VAT. The cheapest I have seen a GTI for is £330 per month inc. VAT. Over 6+23 that is a difference of £2320, plus (in my experience) a difference of £1200 to fuel.

Guy at work has call them up today as wife is due to change vehicle in next couple of months and he asked abut the GTI, they said they might be getting some terms in the next couple of days on the GTI and R.

Will keep you posted!

Anyone know if you can still get a GTD for £250 inc. VAT on lease?

Gateway 2 Lease have them at £263.99 inc. VAT at the moment, on a 6+23 plan.

They're in stock cars too so they'll be black or red and completely standard, not that you need any options on them - they're very well equipped.

I see everyone referencing the terms as 6 + 23 etc. but nobody mentions the mileage limits - generally if you don't do 12+K a year a GTi probably works out as good/a better proposition overall because the PCP's don't normally allow for anything more than 10,000 miles per year but above that is where diesels start to make sense.

The Golf is becoming the modern day Citroen Saxo.

It has been punted out that cheap everyone wants one with a lot ending up in the hands of the neds and boy racers.

The clean image of the Golf has long gone.

Seems a good deal but is it at the expense of an over inflated guaranteed final value?

It's leased on contract hire.

It might work out as a better proposition but it doesn't matter how many miles you do, a GTD will always be cheaper to fuel. I've moved to a GTD from a GTI and it's a far more efficient car. At 10000 miles a year you'll save around £600. People seem to forget that diesel is only 2p/l more expensive at the moment, and even when a diesel car isn't operating at its potential they're still generally far more efficient than a petrol equivalent. I'm no diesel convert but I have very direct experience of the GTD and GTI and the former is 95% of the car in most situations, but far more economical.

I'm not sure that is the case with the GTI, at least where I live. It's still relatively expensive (compared to the competition) and it's massively more to lease than the GTD and R.

The R on the other hand, well you might be right about that! They seem to have landed in the hands of a lot of young lads.

In the last two days I have seen two GTD's being driven by young guys with the driver's seat right back, hand on 12 o'clock on the steering wheel and rear tints.

It's quite clear where the image of the Golf GTD is going.

Oh dear.

The "gangsta lean" seating position isn't though.

Golf GTD may start to have an image problem if not careful hehe
