Anyone watching this? Seems interesting and surprised how new some of the cars being scrapped are

Didn't like the contrived payday no money story - blatantly rubbish. Plus his mrs was typical greater Manchester wooly back glam (shudder) - quite amusing though

He is obviously on hard times judging by his cars, or paying his staff to well if that X5 in the car park wasn't his, not bad but a load of contrived nonsense really.

As a former resident of Breightmet I visited the yards down Bolton and Pimhole in Bury many a time, it's a shame that where I live now none of the yards let you in any more that used to be half the fun climbing over stuff. The owner Metro seems to have a loyal workforce who appreciate the chance given to them to earn a living

They mentioned a couple of times about sending stuff (engines IIRC) to Dubai.

Why would Dubai want a load of old engines?

Wasn't it something like £15k for 100 engines too?

Not sure why. Great as they are for the service they provide you would spend a lot of your time in the cold and wet in some stty yard without any guarantee of income from week to week.
You would also doubtless have to deal with various nefarious types - possibly of the traveling persuasion - demanding you pay them top rate for the load of road signs or drain covers they have brought in, that the man at the council office said 'they could just take away'

Because although TV documentaries lead you to believe the streets are paved with gold and encrusted with gems (which in certain places they almost nearly are) and that everyone swans around in top end, brand new luxury motors, there are a lot of poorer people there as well. These will be immigrants working in construction and service jobs working for the Dubai equivalent of min. wage.

Pretty confident that most of this show is exaggerated and mythical for good television viewing, I was asked to do this show last year and gracefully declined.
I'm glad I did if this was the outcome

I bought a car part from them a few weeks back-just before the series started.I didn't see any of the people in the show whilst I was there. It did however look to be a tidy and well organised operation.

I get that (funnily enough I read an article in National Geographic the other day about the "guest" workforce), what I dont understand was why they'd need several tonnes of old random engines? By all accounts, most people working in Dubai wouldn't be able to afford any sort of car. The engines they were stashing also seemed pretty indiscriminate.

My OH reckoned they'd either be used to be melted down & the steel used in construction, or the engines turned into some sort of generator to provide power for where the workers live.

I doubt they would ship them that far to melt down as there must be nearer places they could get scrap from for less cost.

The Power Plant idea could be the reason. Petrol is dirt cheap there so just run them all the time until they drop and then plug in a new engine and away you go again. If more workers move into the area just give them another couple of engines - no problems with mains cabling and network capacity.

The engines go to Dubai for the same reasons lots of used cars go that way too - it's a trading centre. A lot probably end up somewhere in Africa or similar markets eventually.
