Evening
I am just about to get my 53 blobeye remapped at Mocom racing and they have strongly recommended uprating the fuel pump at the same time. I'm not looking for any crazy figures, just an improvement in driveability, so I was wondering what the general consensus is?
Cosworth panel filter will be going in too and it already has a Prodrive back box.
Thanks

If you've not decatted it or changed any of the intercooler piping then they're likely to be the bottlenecks rather than fuelling but, for the sake of £55-85 and a twenty minute job to swap it over I'd change it for peace of mind. Most of the mappers recommend them and I'd tend to trust what someone like Andy Forrest says over a forum know it all. Given that most of these guys are solely mappers and therefore have no vested interest in selling you parts unnecessarily, I'd suggest that this tells you what you need to know. You don't want a fuel pump crapping out on you anytime you get near peak boost.

Depends on the power you want to achieve. Ask the guys doing it for you. On a WRX set up for similar figures to a prodrive map wouldn't put it under stress and I don't think the PPP did I but it's cheap so you could do it.

I don't think any of the PPP cars came with an uprated fuel pump but then most struggled to make a good pull above 250bhp so the increase wasn't much at peak power but instead lower down the range where fuelling wasn't an issue with the standard pump.

Mocom have recommended it, but at £150 fitted it adds a lot to the bill.
I'm not looking for huge figures, but would have thought 260+ might be achieved?

260 should be pretty straight forward. If you're planning to go any more than that then I'd do it now but you should be alright. Most OEM fuel pumps will outlast the car but fitting one yourself isn't really that tricky at all. They'll likely uncover any fuelling issues with the map anyway so take it from there and enjoy it.

How old is the car? If It's getting on then best to be safe than sorry.

Zak at Mocom is a top bloke and wouldn't rip you off.

Tell him Boyd says hello smile

Colder plugs are always worth considering before a remap too imo

No worries about Zak, he's been great so far, just wanting a second opinion or two.

The car is a 53 plate hatch, done just under 90k. I think the plugs were done by the previous owner.

The issue is that the current fuel pump is 11years old and therefore could stop the car from being able to be mapped safely and therefore have to be tweaked once the pump is changed. Its a straight forward job on that car so fit one yourself

Not with my mechanical skills!

Good point about the age of it though, but I think I'll leave anything to do with flammable liquids to an expert....

I might do the brake pads myself, with some kevlar pads from Godspeed in mind. Just the fact that I'm not sure if I'll do these tells you everything you need to know about my skills with a spanner!

Fair point! I have a local mechanic I play football with who might do it for beer money..... No rush though, until I see what a difference the remap makes.

If you're going to do it, do it pre-remap. You'll kick yourself if it turns out to be sub par as soon as you try to turn the wick up on the map.

I'll get the pump done at the same time as the remap, that's clearly the best idea. It's the brakes I'll do later, or at least get someone less ham fisted to do for me.

OP the fuel pump really is easy to do yourself. There's a good guide on scoobynet you can follow, even I managed it. Quick tip - don't do it after you've brimmed the tank ;-).

Again with the brake pads, assuming you've still got the 4 pots on its a half hour easy job. Guide also on scoobynet to follow if you get stuck.

You'll never guess what I did this afternoon? Yep, used up my tesco 8p off a litre and brimmed it!

Anyway, I'm happy to pay a fair price to have the work done properly and safely. I'll have a look at those guides though, just out of interest, thanks.

Duncan at RaceDynamix seems to think the pump doesn't need replacing until the higher bhp figures but I did mine anyway. It's fairly cheap and fairly easy. I think there's a guide on Youtube too.

Be careful taking the seats out. I took a chunk out of the door shut with one of the seat mounting tabs!! mad

Replace it. However, having watched my mechanic do it, getting the seal right seemed a right faff.
