On the M1 yesterday, low coolant level warning but couldn't pull over due to the road works. Next thin is the temp gauge rising quickly so panic set in, managed to pull over and turn it off before it hit the red, coolant expansion tank boiling, left to cool for 30 minutes and topped up with water. Engine started ok but heaters were blowing cold despite being on full heat so turned it off again and left it.

RAC confirmed water leaking around water pump and towed me to local Saab specialists who are fitting a new pump and cam belt for around £350 + VAT (good price??).

I got home (pissed off) and looked through the history. There is an invoice in there from July 2012 for a cam belt and water pump which was done at 44,000. Car is now on 86,000 and I wondered if 2 years/42,000 miles was the norm or if I've been unlucky?

Plus side is the courtesy Saab is a 2.0T and my god it feels good to be back in a fast petrol engine car again......even if it is 10 years old, manky inside and looking to have been well used smile
