Just thought I'd drag this thread up from the dead, having had cause to look at it today.

The cheap (15 pounds) plasticy Moulinex toaster, that my wife and I bought when we first moved in together, died yesterday. It was 16 years old. frown

We had a look at a few different replacement options in the shops, including a classic Dualit (bit too spendy) and their "Architect Series" version. We also had a look at a Delonghi Icona at half the price of the Dualit Architect one. Interestingly, all of the visible toasting gubbins (the elements, wire holders, all of the internal steel pressings), were absolutely identical between the Dualit Architect and the Delonghi. The exterior design was obviously different, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were essentially the same machine underneath. The power of branding...

{We bought the Delonghi}

I bought my tesco value one for I think £2.40 back when they still used red and blue branding on value stuff, at least 4 years ago. Still going strong and makes fantastic toasted crumpets! £100 seems like insanity to me.
I think I've had mine for 15 years now (at least) and use it at least 4 times a week...3p a go so far, decreasing every time I use it.

I will never buy another toaster, although it may well be a bit Trigger's Broom by the time I bequeath it.

Funny that this has come up. Our Breville toaster whilst not dead has decided to keep tripping the RCD in our consumer unit which is a bit of a PITA.

Was wondering if it was worth spending a few £ to get something better. The old toaster is very slow. Not that old either, 3-4 years maybe. Wouldn't buy another Breville.

But then spend £100 on a Dualit or you can have five Tesco toasters for the same money?

I do love my Dualit but I wouldn't spend £100 on a toaster these days. It was a gift. That said, it will outlast your 5 Tesco machines.

I bet that's only a 2 slicer though? The OP needs 4!

I didn't even know toasters went as high as £100. How the other half live.

When the gadget show tested them a few years back, the one that won was the standard silver Russell Hobbs. This was the one we already had. Still going strong and makes great evenly toasted stuff.

Yes that's great. I'll have to buy one when I stick a knife in our £20 Morphy Richards first thing in the morning.

I have a Dualit 4 slicer and fail to see why they are so well regarded.

They do not toast a Warburton's slice of bread, the top inch remains untoasted.

The slot is too wide which is good for crumpets but it allows the slice of bread to tilt to one side, therefore making one side a lot more toasted than the other.

The elements lose their 'quality' over time, again leading to some bread being more toasted than others.

It's noisy.

It does not pop up.

If you want to make a second batch of toast straight after the first then you have the devil's own job deciding where to set the timer, because the time it takes is much much less because the elements are already hot.

I bought it because I believed it was the best for a catering establishment but it has never been used there, just in my home, but if I was buying a toaster for a catering kitchen it would definitely not be a Dualit

hehe I did that when I was about 7 years old, I thought it would be fun to warm the knife up so it would cut the butter more easily!
Great isn't it. Very satisfying!

I also took great pleasure from smashing an old CRT TV screen with a ball bearing and slashing my bedroom curtains with a Kitchen Devil knife I'd bought for my Mum as a gift when I was 11. With her money.

Kids eh!

Off to buy a toaster...

hehe

Toaster broke the other day and I wanted one that would fit warburtons bread. Got this from Amazon for £35

It annoys me how many toasters you can't actually fit a slice of bread in. The majority seem to be designed for square thin sliced white crap, if you eat real bread you need a variable thickness toaster with a double length slot jut to get anything in it. After looking at a selection of expensive rubbish in Currys and John Lewis I ended up with a cheap Sainsburys one which does a great job.
